I know a diesel uses some oil between oil changes...but just how much i had a chevrolet dealership tell me that the ratio is like 1 quart to every 800 miles is this right??

If it's worn out - how much are you using?

well....im about 200 miles from oil change adn im around 3 quarts low so thats about right.......IF thats right

i only have about 98K on her

Regardless of amount it uses or leaks, keep oil level above the add line .3 quarts down not good.

I always check it regularly but i have add 3 quarts since the oil change..combined not at once..

Change your air filter - that's way passed excessive, unless you do the oil changes at 15kmi intervals.

Dirty air filter draws more oil thru the CDR, but 98kmi shouldn't be anywhere near that quantity.

Pull the oil fill cap when at operating temps, check the volume of vapor at idle, then at 2000rpm

Or, go to Bill's blog, do the suggested water-column test

could it be a bad cdr

Nah - you were posting while I was correcting - I'm slow.................

But, post your results

And, BTW - noting post #5, be a good idea to check your oil monthly, as 3-quarts down really ain't good.

Sorry guys .... I meant I do check my oil weekly ..but since my last oil change i have had to add a total of almost three quarts

Understand now .

Much better, but still not good consumption, depending on o\c interval.

Do the tests, for your peace of mind - post the results, for mine...........

Will do

I use about one quart between oil changes. I attribute that loss to my leaking oil filter adapter. I also have about 104K on her.

You guys need to post interval chronology for better comparison, eh?

Good point, JD. I change mine about every 4K miles.

Me 2 - TD about 9000, with acceptable oil analysis

Ok guys I was asked to post my findings and here they are so far i have not done the vapor test but upon taking the air cleaner assembly apart i found a few things

1. Silicon tube between Turbo and intake Plenum oil soaked
2. Were CDR inserts to valve cover...oil soaked
3. Inside of the tube going to CDR oil soaked
4. Could use new air filter

Although found these prob the turbo does not have any shaft play or impeller damage

Good - remember, 98kmi - the oil in the intake is the total accumulation over those miles.

Dirty air filter will pull more oil from valve cover - that is abnormal, normally.

Do the oil-fill tube check with hot engine for excess blow-by.

Better - do the manometer test for results we can compare to factory spec.

Check the CDR thread in FAQ's for a simple home-brew manometer, or do Bill's easier test.

GMCTD I did the test with the engine at temp at idle and the engine at 2000 rpm and there was no vapor coming out of the oil filler cap.....so idk what else it could be

gmctd

Dirty or wet air filter - either way, causes too much vacuum at the compressor intake, pulling more oil out at higher rpms.

CDR is designed to limit that effect - try pulling the CDR tube from the intake, do the oil fill-tube check again.

No great volume of blow-by out the tube is a good sign - run the manometer test, and you'll know for sure

It will cause it to burn 3 quarts of oil....

GmTrucks4Life
03-17-2007, 08:02 PM
and cause the silcon tube to be soaked in oil....

If those are questions - yes

I generally burn 1/2 quart every 4000 miles, with 180,000 miles on the motor......and that includes the oh so small drip I have coming from somewhere (quarter size stain, every couple days)

Now, for the CDR. I found a lot of oil in my intercooler pipes after installing the intercooler. I did Bill's test and the CDR checked out fine. I went ahead and replaced it anyway, and now no oil in the intercooler pipes. So keep that in mind....CDR may test ok, but still let oil through....
