My dealer says that the infamous intermediate steering shaft is bad in my trcuk, and they are going to be ordering a new one...Is it possible that a "bad" one would cause a vibration in the wheel itself??

Polarbear,

Could you describe the vibration you experience with more detail?

With all the other fixes I've done to my steering it still vibrates with and audible growl when you turn the wheel fast like when backing out of the driveway. It's loud enough passengers even comment. Sounds like a dry bearing.

I pulled the intermeadiate out again and regreased it. No change.

bhowell, sounds like your support bearing in the gearbox is at fault. It is servicable and there is a tsb for it, most dealers are just replacing the gearbox for it.

Thanks Eric,

Dealer replaced my gearbox almost two years ago for the dreaded clunk and I believe for the bearing update you mention. Could the TSB you speak of be for the box I have now as well? The noise comes from the plastic shroud around the ignition swith area but the vibration is felt in the wheel. The best I can describe the vibration is exactly like that of a, well, a, I'm in trouble,..........a ladies vibrator. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif
