Ok i have a 1997 gmc here that Had never missed a beat and the other day it just died No sputter nothing. I started checking things out and noticed the lift pump was not running. I bought a relay and still nothing. I bought a lift pump today and still nothing. Today i also noticed that the glowplug lite isnt working. The motor turns over just fine the filter bowl has fuel in it. I dont have a code reader And dont know anyone that does. Any ideas before I start this thing on fire? Thanks Ryan

That's how my 96 acted when my pmd died. I would know it would restart when the wait to start light would come on. Check ebay for a replacement pmd, look for new only, or use a Heath unit with their guarantee.

A code reader is best but sometimes you have to make due without?
Check the fuses, batteries, battery cables pos. and neg. Some things that can do what you said could be low fuel level, dead battery's, ignition switch or FSD/PMD or it's fuse. The last two won't throw any codes if they fail.

Everything you've checked could fail with really nothing in common to each other. Some auto parts stores will loan out a code reader for short money if any at all. A common failure is the FSD/PMD. The black box on the injection pump. This is the heart and soul for the pump and the only check is replacement with a known good one.

good luck

PMD failure can occur when the lift pump is not pumping the fuel ,thus no cooling of PMD so it croaks.

No glow, no pump, no start, but cranks - sounds like the Ign switch is cratered

Hopefully you've gone thru the harnesses and grounds in the engine bay, including down by the air cond evaporator pipe in the lower passenger-side firewall - looking for frayed, loose, broken, etc wiring and connectors.

If so, you're on the way to the Ign switch, as culpable.

I have been on top of and under this truck looking at the wires 4 times now and havent seen any thing looking bad or fuzzy. Where is the ing switch and what kind of job is it to chage?

You can do a search for it, but you'll have to spell it eye gee in - several members have changed theirs, recently - could even be some pics.

Gonna be expensive, less'n you can take it apart, burnish the contacts, and get it back together.

Well after all this time and checking things out and buying a lift pump it was one of the ECM fuses. I was checking the wrong side. I fell real dumb. I still dont know why it was blown But it could of happened when i jumped the lift pump in the dark on the side of the road. ANyway Thanks all for your help. Now I can get the boat to the lake. Thanks Again...Ryan
