: Change tire size=Void Warranty(Trans)
mikemjmc 09-08-2004, 04:08 PM I went to get new tires at a local store and the owner told me that if I went from 245s to 265s it would void the warranty on the drivetrain and transmission, I think he is wrong about that. Can anyone verify this to be true or false? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Question.gif
dmaxalliTech 09-08-2004, 04:26 PM Technically, he is correct

Trippin 09-08-2004, 08:11 PM Precisely why I kept the stock wheels and tires in the garage. I put them back on the truck any time a trip to the dealer is necessitated.
Carbon04 09-08-2004, 08:30 PM I had the dealer swap out the 245's for 265's at the time of purchase so now who is liable? I have all of the work orders stating that they did the swap, so if a problem arises I can point fingers. On another note most of the dealers in my area sell the trucks with aftermarket wheels and tires.
I read bulletin #01-03-10-010B and what it says is:
"If a truck is found to have other than the above listed tire sizes, no further diagnosis should be undertaken until the original size tires and wheels are reinstalled on the truck."
It also says it is the owner's responsibility to reinstall the original size tires before any diagnosis is undertaken.
I purchased a set of Nokian winter tires in the 245/75-16 size on a set of takeoff PY0 rims. I guess if I ever need transmission diagnosis, on go the Nokians.
It seems silly to me that GM has such a policy on minor size changes, such as going up to 265 tires, or going to a different size that maintains essentially the same rolling radius as the original size.
But it does not say that the warranty is "voided" by changing tire sizes. All it says is that no warranty diagnosis is to be undertaken before the original size tires are reinstalled.
I assume that once you put the original size tires back on, you should drive around a while for the transmission to readapt to the original equipment size.
2500HD04 09-08-2004, 09:47 PM what Trippin said. Buy a complete set of tires and rims. Keep the originals, just in case

Thats gonna depend on the dealer, but likely, it will go back to you, since you hired them to install them..
scott_ktm 09-10-2004, 09:44 AM When I bought mine it had 285s on it. It was the GM of the dealership's demo truck. If I ever have an issue with this I will be very POed. They had several conversions also with aftermarket wheels and bigger tires.
Gotlift 09-10-2004, 10:49 PM When I bought my 01 the dealer installed lift kit and 35" tires, not had any problems when I've took it in. They usually pull tires off the used truck lot.
Maxter 09-11-2004, 12:53 AM All of this seems very stupid keeping in mind that they (GM) sell a 3500 SRW with 265/75/16 with exactly the same drivetrain except for a bonus spring in the rear from what I can read.
Diesel Dragon 09-11-2004, 03:39 PM Maxter,
That bulliten was written Before the 04 3500 SRW came out so I'm sure it's updated some where to include the larger tire's.
But I would think there is a software change for the new larger 265 tires. But why they can't install that in the older trucks is beyond me.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
And I think as far as Dealer installed lift kit's and or larger tire's, it is the dealers responsibility to warranty the work that he did and to have the factory warranty still cover parts that were changed, unless it was written somewhere that it's not covered.
But if you try to go to another dealer with larger tires that Your selling dealer installed they will tell you tough luck, it's not their problem or GM's.

AC Man 09-12-2004, 08:39 AM I changed mine out to 285's after asking the dealer if they could reprogram the truck for them. When I took the truck in to have it programed the service dept tried several times to change it and then called GM, they advised it could not be done and they had flagged my VIN due to the tire change. The salesman then sent me to the Chev dealer which is owned by the same people and I had the same thing happen. The only reason I changed was they said I could. After several phone calls and talking to GM and the owner I changed the tires back and said good bye to the dealer forever.
I thing it is bad judgement on GM's part not to have at least some type of upgrade on the tires as with the 245's on a wet grassy hill you are out of luck.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif

I have several friends and relatives that are police officers(sheriff, deputies, city police, state troopers). I had two(for verification of radar equipment) of them clock me going down the road with the cruise set on 55 mph(long, level straightaway). With the stock 245's on the pyo's, one shot me at 52 and the other had me at 53. With 265/75's on 16x8's, one had 56 and the other had 56-57. I haven't measured the height difference between the two wheel/tire setups. I do know that my truck looks like it should have from the dealer. Plus, if the speedo read fast for nearly 15k miles, I feel I got shorted on my warranty some. But, I will make that up in time and the truck looks much better, IMO.
However, I did put my pyo's and 245's in the shed in case I ever need to go to the dealership for warranty issues.
