: Gauge accuracy question???

So here is the deal. I have an 02' and my brother has an 03'. I have the X-Monitor and he has Autometer analog. I have a smog equipped truck and he does not. Here is the question. Why would his truck, EGT wise, run so much hotter that mine? My truck, even pulling my 31' TT does not hit 1200* for where I pull it to. Even with the standard juice. His will hit over 1200* by itself in a very short WOT burst. With my juice on his truck 1350* before 5th gear is not uncommon. Both trucks are pre-turbo and the probe is in the exact same spot. Why would these trucks be so much different? Mine seems to fit with what others on here are seeing and his is sky high.

Any suggestions??

I going out on a limb and say different gages, different accuracies. Unless you know that both are in calibration and what the response over the range of the gage, it'll be tough to make a side-by-side comparison of a digital to analog gage.

The next thing to keep in mind is that EGT's are almost a direct function of how efficient a diesel is for a given set of conditions. I would venture to say that the fuel mapping is a little different from 2002 to 2003. Also, if any factory changes in ECM programming will have an effect on what one would measure at the exhaust.

Those are my guesses. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

you have a cat? he? either have exhaust?

I couldnt hit 1250 with the 90 hp juice most times according to the attitude.

Pissed off probes or a slower reacting probe maybe? Both the same thckness?

ratlover, yes I have a cat, he does not. I have cat back exhaust but only for one week. He has had the juice since then. We are going to measure the pyro probes soon.Might even try another Autometer gauge on his. Also his truck seems to have a lot higher boost. Mine has a max of 18 right now on the X-Monitor and he hits 23 very quick.

Just thinking out loud here but could the wastegate have anything to do with this? I remember hearing something awhile back about guys plugging the wastegate or something like that.

first, leave the wastegate alone. Gains are minimal and the possible problems are great if not carefull.. Ask White Duramax...

As far as the gauges go, apples to oranges in my opinion, different years, ( small unlikely difference) and different gauges/manufactureres/probes ( huge difference).

Unless the same gauge/probe reads high on one over the other, I wouldnt sweat it much...

Thanks Eric. We had actually talked about putting my X-monitor in his just to see.

Thanks again.

Also, check to make sure the probe is at the right depth. When I installed mine, I initially installed the probe too deep and the egt's seemed to be on the high side. After checking with my depth gauge, I found I had the probe in the manifold too far.
