Friend has a 2002 with 178000 miles and was driving down the road and motor cut out and would not run. Changed the fuel filter and tried starting and nothing. Tried cranking while puimping the primer pump and truck will run as long as you pump the primer pump, sa soon as you stop the truck kills. So what does everyone think is the damage. Fuel pressure doesn't look like it comes up at all tech 2 I believe showed 200 while idling don't remember if it went up or not when rpm's come up ????? Thanks in advance for your help. Jeff

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak. Is filter good and tight and bleeder screw ? Have you bleed the filter till you achieve clear fluid?

Have bled the system good and the truck will run if you keep pumping the primer pump but the minute you stop it will kill. Will run a vacuum test in the morning but was just wondering the possibilities. Thanks Jeff

There is a low pressure gear pump on the back of the high pressure fuel pump. This low pressure pump feeds the high pressure pump. From your description it sounds like the high pressure pump is working, but for some reason the fuel is not being fed into it.


Like Mackin said, a leak in the fuel system before the fuel pump or a restriction (like clogged fuel filter) might cause the symptoms you described. A faulty low pressure gear pump might also. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Was the fuel filter changed recently? I had mine changed and it had a bad O ring which gave me the same problem you are describing. It caused a vaccum leak in the fuel system. I would prime it but it would die & would have to re-prime it again, Good luck.

After more testing we found the fuel pump was bad and was changed out yesterday. The thing is he bought this truck used and it appears the pump was changed before. Well thanks for the help. Jeff
