Just rec'vd my oil report from Oil Analyzers. DA is '03, sample taken at 16162, oil in since 6930, approx 12 mon. Oil is Amsoil series 3000 HD Diesel syn 5W-30. Also have Amsoil dual remote filters, 1 is full flow, other is bypass, both are large in size. Here are the figures:

iron-23, chromium-01, lead-69, copper-168, tin-1,aluminum-4, nickel-0, silver-4, silicon-61, boron-18, sodium-0, magnesium-256, calcium-3973, barium-0, phosphorus-1029, zinc-1218, molybdenum-0, titanium-0, vanadium-0, potassium-0, fuel<1, vis@ 100 C cst-11.24, water-0, soot/solids (%wt.)-0.1, glycol-neg, tbn-9.23, oxid-9.0, nitr-8.0, f-soot-0.01.

Lead and copper are flagged as abnormal, but not critical. Lab speculated that copper may be leachate from gaskets/sealers and/or oil cooler. I'm hoping the lead being abnormal is only the newness of the engine.

Recommendation from lab is to changefilters only, not oil, and top off.

All comments/questions, positive or negative, welcomed.

Oil Analyzers, inc did mine, I ordered a kit thru Amsoil. There are other firms doing the same thing, such as Blackstone, and others that I'm sure will be brought up in this thread.

I am an Amsoil dealer, and that's the one they sell, so that's what I bought. Greg Landuyt is an Amsoil dealer and a supporting vendor on this forum. He is at lube specialist.com, and I suggest you contact him. I believe in patronizing forum supporting vendors, and he beat me to this one! I'm not sure of the price as my catalog is at my shop, but you order the kit from them and the price you pay includes the analysis, the container, and postage both ways.

I have put my analysis in bold so that you have a comparison to work with, you will note my silicon is at 32 which is high, this has been put down to silicon gasket material as work was done on the engine 6000 miles earlier, but I have to keep an eye on it

Your iron, lead, copper, is extreamly high, I would keep this post going until you are get a pro. analizing these figures for you.

iron-23 2, chromium-01 3, lead-69 5, copper-168 11, tin-1 2,aluminum-4 5, nickel-0 0, silver-4 0, silicon-61 32, boron-18 0, sodium-0 7, magnesium-256 0, calcium-3973 0, barium-0 0, phosphorus-1029 0, zinc-1218 0, molybdenum-0 15, titanium-0 0, vanadium-0 0, potassium-0 2, fuel<1 <2.0, vis@ 100 C cst-11.24 15.0, water-0 <0.1, soot/solids (%wt.)-0.1 0.2, glycol-neg neg, tbn-9.23 9.1, oxid-9.0 4.3, nitr-8.0 <2.0, f-soot-0.01 0.2.

good luck

I just sent in my first oil analysis this morning to Blackstone Labs, so I'm sorry I can't help you with an opinion, but this link might give you, & anyone else interested in a UOA, some good info.

I get my analysis done through George Morrison at avlube.com. One thing i do like is they keep adding my results to the same file, so i get my history with my current data, My original samples were with Amsoil 15w-40HD, but i was not getting the best results. i switched to delvac 1 and my results have improved.. however that could just be the engine breaking in too.

i do know that different oils have different additive packages in them which may account for some of differences in the magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, and molybdenum.

Here is my first oil analysis with 40K on the clock Amsoil 5W/40 onboard since 35K .I have the Amsoil Bypass system in place since 35K as well.

Iron 10

Chromium 0

Lead 9

Copper 8

Tin 0

Aluminum 2

Nickel 0

Silver 0

Silicon 13 (With a K&N Drop in filter!)

Boron 9

Sodium 5

Potassium 6

Magnesium 144

Calcium 2848

Phosphorus 1512

Zinc 1606

Molybdenum 0

Fuel A

Water <0.1

Glycol N

Visc 100c 11.7 LLLL

I plan on changing the oil tomorrow, even though the remarke said 'Wear levels are normal, Viscosity is Slightly Low, No corrective action at this time. Continue Normal PM, resample @ normal interval.' Because that Viscosity low thing freaks me out a little. Overall I am very happy!

This is my first oil analysis on the truck. We did 3 oil changes in the first 2300 miles. We then put Amsoil 15W-40 in it. Test was done at 6973 miles with 4843 miles on the oil.

Iron 13
Chromium 0
Lead 14
Copper 45
Tin 0
Aluminum 2
Nickel 0
Silver 0
Silicon Vis.13.52
OX% 14.0
NOX% 12.0
Soot.09
TBN 6.66

Copper is a little high but seems normal for most dmax engines for a while. I expect it to be lower after changing oil next time and sampling with the same amount of miles on the oil. Truck is using stock filteration both oil and air. The EGR is going to reek havic with oil as can be seen by the TBN. I will be sampling again at 10K to see how things are doing. I will then change oil and block off the EGR to see if my therory is correct. I think the exhaust gases being recirulated causing extra acid is way the TBN is so low at this mileage. I have seen other oil analysis with about the same results using other brands of oil.

DOM,

Your lead, copper and silicon seem pretty high. Like Nick, I use avlube.com. My most recent UOA with 8,400 miles on Delvac 1 with a Baldwin 1441 oil filter, a NAPA Gold air filter, and about 5,000 miles of heavy, hot towing:

iron 21
chromium 1
lead 7
copper 18
tin 6
alumium 4
nickel 1
silver 0
silicon 15
boron 45
sodium 4
potassium 4
magnesium 533
calcium 2240
phosphorus 1578
zinc 1672
molybdenum 0
fuel A
water <0.1
glycol N
visc 14.2
soot 0.1
oxidation 14
nitration 8
TBN 10.2

EGR doesn't seem to be causing any problems. This was the last analysis before installing my Oilguard. These good results should get even better.

I appreciate all the response now a few comments/questions:

1-Letsgo: what is the total mileage on your truck? I have read that on a new engine, silicon, lead, and copper may be high at first due to initial wear in, leachates, and residuals.

2-Diesel Dually:you state Amsoil 5w-40, I can't find a diesel rated 5w-40 in the Amsoil lineup. Is it 15w-40 or 5w-30? My 5w-30 was slightly lower than yours and not tagged as low. Lab sheet says 30wt parameters 9.3 <12.3, 40wt 12.5 <16.2. If you have 5w-30 in and mis tagged to lab as 5w-40, that may be your viscosity problem! If, however you have 15w-40 onboard I agree you have a problem.

3-LanduytG- I didn't do the extra changes early in the truck's life as you did. Do you think maybe you flushed out more residuals and leachates than I did by doing those extra early changes?

Tsckey- I agree that lead, copper, and silicon are high. Lab stated the copper was probably leachate and I'm hoping the lead was because truck had only 6930 miles when the oil was installed and that is additional wearin on bushings and bearings. I did about 4k of towing 6k# during that period. As for the silicon, I'm still on the OEM air filter and I'm hoping it's high from assembly residuals.

Again, all comments are deeply appreciated and are valuble to me as I've never used this technique before. So, please, continue. Edited by: dirty old man

DOM,

You are right, I used Series 3000 5W/30. I will be switching over to 15W/40 next change (soon...definately before 41K)

diesel dually,

I don't know if switching over to 15w-40 going into the winter in Colarado is really a good idea. Amsoil 5w-30 is a much better oil and also has a lower pour point. I've run Amsoil for years in my diesels and found this to be true (in my case anyway)

That's what I remember too about colorado. Back in the late 80's I lived in Golden for awhile and it was'nt much different from here exept for the wrecked cars at the bottom of some really high hills going up the switchbacks (I think that's what they called the roads going up and down).
