Well a few weeks ago my father got the motor really hot...but did not over heat and put a new radiator in and t-stat in. Last week he went to go start the truck (cold outside) and nothing...the starter gear just grinds on the flywheel. Now hes tearing the motor down to the short block to see what he got himself into. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone in the past and if they had any advise as to what might be the best way for a new motor. Right now where hoping the block is in 1 piece. I found a place in detriot that builds a low compression high boost 6.5 td that put out hp and tq #'s compariable to todays new diesel motors...any thoughts?

Peninsular would be the place to go if you are looking for HP....
If you just need to get by you may want to go to some local salvage yards and do some searching....

It isn't just a starter problem is it ?

Did the engine work fine between the time it overheated and the day it gets stuck?
Did you check if your headgasket is blown and if you get locked by water in a cylinder?
About engines, I heard a lot positive things about the NAVISTAR, looks to be better than the PENINSULAR wich are best designed to marine. Just what I heard, haven't test it by myself.

I thought mine had pretzeled a rod on me doing the same thing. Turned out it was 2 bent starter bolts and a Bendix that was shot.
Still got a new motor waiting on the stand tho.. Just in case..:D

yeah...engine worked fine for the 3 weeks in between. Kinda felt stupid though cause we were thinking about it and my father and i both heard hissing from the truck and though it was just a hole in the muffler...but now thinking it might have been the headgasket leaking?? Going to tear down the motor tomorrow and see what we have. Starter works fine cause it grinds on the flywheel. thanks!

Peninsular uses the Navistar block. That was all that Navistar did was remake and redesign the block.
Navistar makes an enginer JUST FOR truck application.
Navistar was hired by AMG Hummer to build a more reliable block. That is where it all started.

might just be a leakin' head gasket and hydro'd a cylinder....or an injector leak down

Not a 6.5 guy, but pull the glowplugs and see how it cranks. Obviously water coming out of a cylinder would be undesireable.
