has anyone removed stock muffler and ran straight pipe? if so how is it? did it help performance? is it too loud? I was looking at a few exhaust systems and one did not include a muffler just a straight pipe. So I thought why not? thanks 02 f250 pover stroke.

It isn't too loud, it should lower you EGT's nicely, the stock muffler is the most restrictive part of the exhaust. It shouldn't be too loud but you have have some flutter sound.

With an 4" exhaust system it sounds even nicer without a muffler.

Take that muffler and catyletic conveter off and throw them away. Run straight pipe all the way to the rear and tip it out the right side infront of a mud flap or rear bumper. I did that to my 1995 F-350 and it made a large difference. It now runs great and sounds awsome. It is not loud unless you mash on it. Then it will growl. It sounds great now. I live in a small "Wyoming Town" and my neighbors are always in trouble for loud vehicles. I have been pulled over about 3 times http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif but not for loud exaust. The officer told me my truck sounded great and let me go. ha ha ha.. Try it you will like it.

Not to be rude, It will sound like it's farting if it's a 7.3 and whistle if it's a 6.0.

I bought the 99 F250 back in 01 with dual straight pipes. There is no restriction and it does not sound like it's farting nor does the dozen or so other 7.3's with similiar exhaust that I've heard. When I had the Diablo 78 hp sport chip installed it sounded more like a big block gasser when it was hammered.

I'm just joking with you guys. I said that because my friend has one with a muffler on it and it really does sound like it has "excess gas" coming out of out. The ones I have heard with 4 or 5" straight pipes don't sound to bad though.

Something funny about Z71 Grizzly's post is that a 02' DMax straight pipped, doesn't sound much different that a 7.3PSD!

Don't really know since I don't get a chance to here modified Dmax's ever. It's all Cummins or 7.3's. I know since there both V-8's they sound similar but the ford still has more "excessive gas" though.

I have no muffler or cat on my truck and I really like the way it sounds....My buddy has a Cummins that we built stacks for it is a lot quieter than my PSD....but it's a different sound too...more like a whinny sound to it, than the choppy PSD....

I think the older PSD's sounded better than newer ones. More of a solid sound. If your buddys stacked Cummins is quieter than your truck, your truck must be loud or his has smaller than 5" stacks. My neighbors truck is a high pitched loudness. He has 6" stacks

I have 4" pipe.....his stacks are 5"(only for that 3" of them)...but everything else is 4" pipe...

I havent heard a newer PSD with no cat, or muffler yet.....The D-max's sound a lot like the older PSD.....

I wish the PSD's from 99 on sounded like the older ones. My friend had a 96 with 5" straight pipe and it sounded good. more of a solid sound and not as much "excess gas" coming from the tailpipe. I bet your truck looks and sounds good too.

I have 4" straight piped mine all the way back to the OEM location it sounds very good. Not too loud, and it got rid of my exhaust drone.

I have a 4" from the turbo, going into a 5" for expansion and resonance... It sounds like a tug boat. (in a good way)

Of the big three the Ford's have the wosrt straight pipe sound. They "flutter"

Dmax comes in second.

Cummins sound smooth, loud and consistant. Must be because of the straight 6.

Rember... the sound is a result of how the turbo effects the exhaust
stream. The turbo is what keeps it from sounding super loud like a
straight piped gas engine.

I like the sound of Kyle's in the video of the Hillsboro pull. He had his pipe coming out the aftermarket hood and it sounded like a Mack truck or something. Had that whistle from the one truck in the movie "Joyride"

It's b/c Ford and D-max's are V8 and the Cummins is a I6.....

I like my buddies Cummins but I kinda like the choppy sound of a PSDhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif
