: Just took the truck to the stealer......
NorCal 2500HD 09-07-2004, 01:28 PM he asked what was wrong and I told them that the truck smoked like a train, lost power and sounded like it had rod knock..........right off the bat he said injector(s), but he said that they were going out on trucks that had like 70-80k miles on them.....
I took the edge/attitude out but I left the EGT probe in and zip tied it to a a/c line. Could they void the warranty because of this? Or am I being paranoid for no reason. He also asked about the exhaust ( full mbrp system no cat or muffler )
Diesel Power 09-07-2004, 02:40 PM not unless you volunteer incriminating info..
NorCal 2500HD 09-07-2004, 03:47 PM gotcha thanks.......
Terrain Twister 09-07-2004, 03:50 PM If they say anything about it, just tell them it's for the gauges you haven't installed yet.
Kendall69 09-07-2004, 04:56 PM Yes they can void things and look for ways to do just that. Once I was in the waiting room at the stealer and the service guys were having a huge laugh at a guy that needed an new tranny, but had a lift. They said sorry you are SOL, because of the lift.
Also the computers they have now can tell a lot more about your trucks history then you might think. I had one service guy tell me how many times i started my truck since the last service.
The point I am trying to make is they can tell by various reading on your engine if you did or did not have a chip installed. Question is will they look for that info...who knows?
I know F**rd was looking for chips so guys were re-setting their computers by disconnecting the batteries for a short while then with a clean computer they go to the stealer.Edited by: Kendall69
NorCal 2500HD 09-07-2004, 07:52 PM well I just got off the phone with the dealer and he said that there were 12 codes. They got the truck to smoke like a freight train 3 times.....but when the truck smoked it did not throw any codes.......the service guy im dealing with is a crewman for my buddies race team so who knows whats gonna happen on this one.......he also said somthing about the tech having to talk to an engineer about the problem..........im keepin my fingers crossed on this one......
Burner 09-07-2004, 09:56 PM keep us posted. I would like to know what they say.

cdn111 09-08-2004, 12:28 AM Probably the number one injector like the few I have seen. The symptoms are the exact same, and I bet if you look at the outside of the #1 injector you can see some mis-coloration and and oily feel on the injector. You might check it out but sounds like the rest of them that "Didn't get tightened down from the factory" all on number one.
socaldieseltech 09-08-2004, 12:40 AM Norcal2500HD, if the tech is able to duplicate it, have him disable injectors while it is happening. You'll probably end up having to add fuel additive. Make sure you have them give you a case of it on the house! If you have radical fuel knock, huge clouds of black smoke, and no DTC's, I can almost guarantee the fuel additive will help. Especially since you are in CA, our fuel here is a problem.
socaldieseltech 09-08-2004, 12:43 AM Ok, I didn't see at first where you said you had 12 codes stored. How many are in the PCM? And do you know the codes? It would help.
dmaxalliTech 09-08-2004, 07:41 AM You'll probably end up having to add fuel additive. Make sure you have them give you a case of it on the house! Problem with that is GM dont recommend the use of it, so getting a dealer to give it away as a repair is unlikely
LanduytG 09-08-2004, 08:25 AM On the way to Kennedy's this past weekend my LLY with 9K on it all of a sudden started to smoke heavy blue/white smoke, sounded as if a rod was ready to go. After a couple of miles it cleared up and has been fine since. That was not a fuel quality issue and additive will not keep it from happening. I would suspect and injector/software problem. Put the Tech 2 on it right after it happened and know codes present. Injector balance sucks though.

NorCal 2500HD 09-08-2004, 11:48 AM greg,
thats what my problem was exactly......
About the 12 codes.....I wil find out today.
LanduytG 09-08-2004, 01:07 PM NorCal2500
I did not have any codes but I guess that does not really mean much.

Thats what I thought until a field engineer told me to put it in. Maybe you're not having the problems like we are here in southern california. I talked to TAC and they said its mostly isolated to socal and texas. They were the ones to recommend the additive, if you don't think the dealer would give it away, ask DURAMAX1.
DURAMAX1 09-08-2004, 10:39 PM What's up SOcaltech, He is right. Stanadyne is giving to me by dealer whenever I need. Had all these symptoms everyone describe's. After running additive, it has gone away.
NorCal 2500HD 09-08-2004, 11:22 PM dealer called me tonight and he says that the problem was electrical and thats what was causing it to smoke, knock and lose power....a few loose conections and a bad ground on the block somewhere....ill find out more tomorrow when i go get the truck.
socaldieseltech 09-08-2004, 11:54 PM DURAMAX1, never heard back from you that week, been busy?
dmaxalliTech 09-09-2004, 12:08 AM socal, if it works, more power. Havent heard of it around here, but your right, could be isolated.. GM is a funnny bird sometimes
NorCal, the grounds on the block could have been loose and poor contract, that will set cam/crank codes and contribute to smoke, rough idle, knock, etc. Tried that as repair many times, but I have yet to fix one by repairing groundshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
socaldieseltech 09-09-2004, 12:51 AM dmaxallitech, kinda reminds me when GM sent out a bulletin saying injectors on the gas engines didn't need to be cleaned/flushed as a maintenance item, then a while later sent out another bulletin saying if they're stuck try to unstick them and if succesful do a flush/clean.
dmaxalliTech 09-09-2004, 12:55 AM lmao, your so right...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
GM...just like a woman,,, always changin her mindhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
DURAMAX1 09-09-2004, 11:14 AM Socaltech, Yeah been busy. Will cruise by Tommorow if that's cool. Norcal 2500, hope everything works out. Keep us updated.
mahalkita 09-10-2004, 12:41 AM Stupid question: What is a hot chick with STD's?
socaldieseltech 09-10-2004, 01:46 AM OK, I'm no expert but I'm going to have a go at this
Hot = Attractive or good looking, not as in temperature
Chick = Woman, female, girl, not as in young chicken
With = accompanied by
STD's = sexually transmitted diseases, ie. gonnorea, clap, etc.
Hope this clears things up for you.
Dmax Tim 09-10-2004, 09:15 AM Better define the 'hit it' or he might try try to run the chick over w/ his truck http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
NorCal 2500HD 09-10-2004, 12:21 PM LOL.....translation was dead on.
mahalkita 09-10-2004, 09:49 PM socaldieseltech,
thanks for the nice translation in detail. I actually needed only the last (STD's) - the rest I was able to figure out myself. Still did not get used to all these shortcuts and abreviations...
socaldieseltech 09-10-2004, 11:33 PM no problem.
