: Frustrated with outcome of leveling
BIG DURAMAX 03-12-2007, 10:57 PM So here is the deal I installed the cognito leveling kit with the longer shocks still rides smooth but still about an inch lower than the back with the keys maxed. My problem now is I went to get my tires today they did a test fit and the outside corner edge of the tire rubs the back of my wheel well, wheels are 8x17 with a 4.5 backspace and 0 offset, tires are 285/70/17 BFG AT's what the hell do I do now and will the green keys help me at all I still have the stock ones on by the way. If it helps to judge height my cv boot ribs are not touching each other. Please help:(
ob_1jr 03-12-2007, 11:18 PM You probably need to tie back the parking brake cable (driver's side) and fenderliner that is in front of it. Is it rubbing on both sides (driver and passenger)?
BIG DURAMAX 03-12-2007, 11:21 PM They only test fitted the driver side it was actually rubbing on the back plastic of the wheel well, Looked awsome for the 3 minutes it was on there.
OneTALLGMC96 03-12-2007, 11:22 PM Do some minor trimming, rearranging in the wheel wells. If needed, install the green keys and crank a bit more. Your ride quality will diminish some, but tires should clear.
For reference, I have 305's on 16X9 with stock keys and only some cranking...don't be afraid to be creative when trimming.
BIG DURAMAX 03-12-2007, 11:29 PM I am a little worried abouth the sheet metal at the bottom where the fender meets the side panel

STOP !!
Before you do any trimming or keys, lets make sure you have this set up right. I don't think you bought this kit from me but I do this all day long and you have somthing small off with what you did. I'm here to help. Sorry I'm leaving the shop now but will be in @ 7:30 am. Call me, I can run down a few commin things that may help. You don't want to over max the UCA. I've run many tire sizes on this truck and kit. I can tell you pretty much everything you need to do over the phone.
Tonight :(

kylant 03-12-2007, 11:58 PM i have the cognito kit on my truck. stock keys turned up, not maxed. i am running 285/70-17 bfg's on weld 17x8.5" wheels with 4.5" backspacing. i do not rub. i did have to take my heat gun and "mold" the liner at the rear of the wheel well. right now I have about 1" clearance and the closest point between the edge of the tire and the rear of the well. something does not seem right. give nick a call and he should help you out. good luck

BIG DURAMAX 03-13-2007, 12:24 AM i have the cognito kit on my truck. stock keys turned up, not maxed. i am running 285/70-17 bfg's on weld 17x8.5" wheels with 4.5" backspacing. i do not rub. i did have to take my heat gun and "mold" the liner at the rear of the wheel well. right now I have about 1" clearance and the closest point between the edge of the tire and the rear of the well. something does not seem right. give nick a call and he should help you out. good luck
Thanks for the pep talk, I feel like I can see the other side just can't semm to get there.
mr_udy 03-13-2007, 07:42 AM Talk to Nick at Norcal...hes done more of these than anyone here (Id imagine).
But....
How much space do you have between upper control arm and frame stop now? You dont want to crank any more (by using keys or whatever) if you cant get your finger slid between the two. If you have more room, then I'd say do the keys and crank her up a bit more (again, be sure to leave a fingers width between UCA and frame stop...or you'll get a bad ride).
I sorta woulda guessed your tire/wheel combo was pushing the limits. I only have about 1" clearance at rear of wheel well with 285s on stock wheels. The offset and width of your new rim move will move the tire out quite a bit and thus increased potential for rubbing. Sounds like alot of guys get away with it...so dont worry...you will probably have to trim or tie back the inner fender from what I read here.
I am considering buying a buddies 16x8 M/T Challengers but will trial fit with the 285s 1st as I am not sure the backspacing/offset...although betting its 4.5". I'd really rather not have to trim stuff.
Be sure to post with whatever you end up doing...
BIG DURAMAX 03-13-2007, 09:44 PM I actuall have two finger widths between I was not as lucky as you to get 3 inches only about 1.5 inches. I have about 1 1/8 inches between bump stops and my CV boot ribs are not touching each other at all. Like I said I still have about an inch to catch up to the stock back height, Nick from nor-cal thought I should still be able to crank some. so wish me luck Glad I bought the lifetime alignment.
mr_udy 03-14-2007, 07:23 AM Yeah, sounds like you'll definitely benefit from re-indexed keys so you can crank more.
Got any photos of the truck now (w/o new tires/wheels)?
I've got a tight fingers width clearance between UCA and frame stop...never experienced a situation where I "topped" out yet...
kylant 03-14-2007, 11:44 AM I have about 1 1/8 inches between bump stops
crank them up more. you can keep your ride with about 3/4" between the stops. there is is your problem. you can get almost another 1/2" between the stops before your ride starts to get bad. I bet that puts you up about 1" or more. I bet if you do this, your rubbing issue will go away. good luck:)
BIG DURAMAX 03-14-2007, 10:34 PM well I need almost 1.5 inches to catch the back height so I hope I get that at least. and a far as pis go the camera is being repaired as we speak I will get them on soon
kylant 03-15-2007, 11:39 AM just a thought, when you installed your kit, did you unload your t-bars and remove your adjuster keys? if so, maybe you got the indexing on the keys wrong? I don't know if it is possible, but maybe? good luck
mr_udy 03-15-2007, 12:37 PM no need to release t-bars for Cognito Leveling kit...

No I did not touch those yet thanks though.

Borowed friends camera should have mine soon after install is done. And yes I know my truck is dirty, damn jobsites
mr_udy 03-16-2007, 07:17 AM Looks better already...
JD4440 03-16-2007, 06:52 PM Lowered mine down about an inch and it gave me about 3/4" at the droop stop. You've probably got the clearance w/ new keys if the factory keys are maxed out.
