I am looking at my first diesel truck, 95 4x4 6.5 185k (green & gray lol).
The seller says it has a bad IP, it will start and run for a while and then stop, wait a while and it will start again.......dose that sound like an IP? What do you think is a fair price for this truck? Is the 6.5 motor a good one? I go to look again tomorow, HELP!

Sounds a little like a PMD to me. That's the most commonly misdiagnosed thing about the 6.5. The PMD fails and everyone thinks it's the IP. They are a nice truck, that's a little high on the mileage, but if it's been taken care of it should be okay. Plan on at least a PMD, a 3.5 or 4 inch exhaust to make it driveable, and watch for cooling system trouble, the pre 97s had poor cooling systems. I don't know what may be a fair price, running good and reliable it would be worth no less than $4-5k, but with running issues who knows how low you could get it. An IP job is expensive, but you can get PMDs for under $300. What are they asking?

Thanks, What is a PMD (sorry i don't know)? How hard is it to fix (can a slightly more than novice do it)? Can I test it before I buy and how? What signs should I look for if it were an IP?

Pump Mounted Driver. A control module for the injection pump. Best fix would be the heath kit, comes with everything you need to keep it lasting long, as well as a 7 yr warranty. About $500 and isnt hard to install

I think you've got the info you need regarding the engine running.

Regarding price, if the interior and exterior are in good shape, 5 - 7k for it would be fair in my mind...

The seller wants $3000.00 for the truck, it is in good condition overall.
I think I am going to pass on it though, pertty much everyone I've asked has told me to let it go  . Thank You for all the help.:)

Rex, you lookin for another burb?

Hope he gets back to ya.

Seems lots of peeps come on here, Hey I'm new to diesels, post a couple times, then, flash in the pan, never heard from again.

Mowman, if your serious about a diesel, listen to what is said on here. Better info here then a good bunch of shops, dealers, etc.

You speak the truth. I've spent a lot of time on some other diesel sites, was always a little disappointed in the minimal attention the 6.5 got, plus a lot of people badmouthing them because they aren't a Cummins or a Powerchoke. Few times people would suggest coming here, but I didn't because I figured it was just like all the rest. I think it was Joe D who finally convinced me to check here, and I'm glad I did. Way more solid 6.5 info here than I've found in 4 years at all the other sites.
