: HELP LOST POWER
AlexIII 09-06-2004, 10:48 PM Put in the turbo master. The original part stopped working and kept the waste gate open. On the way home tonight it threw the codes 12 78 81 and 91. I think my head gasket is gone need some suggestions. Thank you so much 94 c 3500hd turbo auto 2wd
Texas Diesel Guy 09-06-2004, 11:04 PM Sounds like your Turbo Master is set a little too hot and your overboosting.
12- Means your engine is off, no prob there, shows up everytime.
78- Wastegate solenoid fault sounds like you unplugged your switch, needs to stay plugged in, whether its actually got vacuum supplied to it or not, to keep the computer happy.
81- 2-3 Shift Solenoid Circuit Fault, clear it see if it comes back, then check your tranny wires, is there a problem shifting from 2nd to 3rd?
91- Cylinder #1 Balance Fault. That's not good, hopefully you just cracked an injector line, since #1 is the easiest to reach, and didn't retighten it. Truck should have a definite dead miss, no smoke but a leak if its a line loose, and white smoke if its a hung open injector or washed out cylinder or head/head gasket/valve problem. Normally, holes 7,8 give fits on these trucks, so I expect you to say you left the line loose or cross threaded it.
AlexIII 09-07-2004, 03:47 PM Nope didn't touch the injectors. I does blow a hell of alot of smoke when i fire it up. and goes through about a gal of antifreeze every couple of days when she works hard.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif None of it is going on the ground so i am also afraid of a head gasket. Any more suggestions. I did clear the code and nothing came back. thanks diesel guy for your info.
quantum mechanic 09-07-2004, 04:26 PM A CO2 test can confirm if your headgasket is blown.
Alot of smoke at start-up can indicate weaK injectors.
AlexIII 09-08-2004, 07:06 AM Ok the injectors would make sense but what is a CO2 test. Thanks agian
bowtie 09-08-2004, 07:16 AM A CO2 test can confirm if your headgasket is blown.
Alot of smoke at start-up can indicate weaK injectors. Yeap it can point to the injectors, but that wouldn't explain the gallon of anti-freeze a week would it. My money is on the head gasket or head
Texas Diesel Guy 09-08-2004, 07:25 PM bowtie is right, whether the injectors are performing well or not, a half gallon a day out the tail pipe has to be addressed before you can judge them. It would be a really good idea, while you got the heads off to remove the cat if you havent' done so already. Platinum, anti-freeze and carbon make a horrible combination, it probably weighs 40lbs right now.
AlexIII 09-15-2004, 02:01 PM I just want to thank everyone for there info. I found this stuff called blue devil. The stuff works awsome. It sealed the head gasket lead and stoped the antifreeze from disappering. got some power back now i need to look into the injectors. thanks again
Bobt250 09-15-2004, 04:01 PM Where did you get the blue devil? I did a google search and only got hits unrelated to our topic. My VW diesel is losing water, albeit at a much slower rate than you described so I think it might help me avoid a headgasket change for a while.
AlexIII 09-15-2004, 08:39 PM http://www.gouniversalproducts.com/ that is the home page...Well my truck head let go i think. No power whatso ever. So i am gonna have it towed. What should i do. head gaskets 1600 if it is just the gaskets, or remand motor for 5800 with a 1 year warranty. I don't have the time to do it myself
quantum mechanic 09-15-2004, 08:48 PM You have to make the call. I'd do it myself for $1600 on the head gasket. When it comes off you'll see if the head's cracked. salvage heads are running $200-350. rebuilt would be more.
Joey D 09-16-2004, 06:36 PM How many miles on the motor?
Texas Diesel Guy 09-16-2004, 07:39 PM $1600???? like american dollars? for head gaskets? If I remember correctly, I paid only about 6 or 700 for a set of rebuilt heads for my truck, new valves/springs guides, sleeves in the water jackets to prevent cracks from leaking coolant, 50 bucks for gaskets and put them in my self as a weekend project. I'm pretty sure I got them from Lander's Discount Automotive, but I'll double check on that, I do remember they were way under everyone elses price and they've worked well for me for the past 2 years.
AlexIII 09-16-2004, 11:28 PM only 80000 miles on the beast. I plan on doing the head gaskets myself. I am gonna tear apart the heads on sunday to see if i need new ones or just gaskets any suggestions on what to look for would be great
quantum mechanic 09-17-2004, 09:46 AM Look for cracks on the combustion side of the head.
AlexIII 09-28-2004, 01:03 PM Well, took the heads off and they were junk had them pressure tested and they didn't pass. Got remand for $432 a piece. So the gaskets were also junk. Another question...my turbo bushings seem to be a little loose not blowing by oil yet. THanks again
quantum mechanic 09-28-2004, 01:29 PM It will get real loose when the bushings are warn. When you have an inch of play in it or so.
