Does anyone know anything about this or have it installed??
Just happen to come across their 4" exhaust system for the mighty DMAX. At $299 it sure ain't a bad price!!! Not to mention I got 20 summit bucks and some birthday money trying to burn a hole in my pocket!!! This could be a great option for those of us that don't need SS exhaust systems....

I am not sure that is for the Duramax. It does say it is for a diesel but says 1999-2002 . If it was for duramax it should say 01-03. Either way, summit does make one for the Duramax. Do a search, there has been some feedback in the past.

I'm not completely sure about the Summit exhaust, but I did ask about the Jeg's Duramax exhaust system. I have a feeling they would be very similar since both are in the same market. The guy at Jeg's said that their exhaust was LOUD!! Kinda like a glass pack sound he said. Too loud for me.

I got to listen/look at BlueOx03's Summit exhaust up at the Grand Rapids GTG. I looked/sounded sweeet!!!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif For the price, I have to think it is one of the best deals out there right now. At idle it had a nice throaty rumble that was a bit louder and definately deeper than stock. And while Babe was doing some nice long juice inspired burnouts by the service bay it was louder than stock for sure, but not terribly obnoxious (IMHO). I will probably be looking at this system in the near future myself!!!

I didn't notice that it states 1999-2002. In the "big book" I just received it states 2001-2003. Hopefully the book is correct and it is just a misprint on the website.

Thanks for the input. That is my main concern, too much noise. Already have aproval from the wife to buy it, but got cold feet not knowing how loud it was... If the wife ain't happy, no one is!!


Add $31 for a stainless steel polished tip and I got a budget 4" exhaust system!!

Beware budget exhaust systems. Sometimes (OK alot of times) their fit isn't as good as the higher end systems. I purchased an aluminum system from an online outfit and the intermediate pipe had to be cut depending on the wheel base of your vehicle. Others I have talked to say some systems do not line up w/ the factory hangers and brackets. Summit is a reputable company, but they aint the ones bending and cutting the pipe. Edited by: FILO

I'm not going to say you should or should not buy this system. I will give you some advise in selecting a system and I'll tell you what I think of this one. Do a search on TheDieselPage.com (http://forum.thedieselpage.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=006457) and you'll see how this can go.

My advise is to go for a ride in a truck with the system you're thinking about, that's the only way you'll know if it's for you or not. Make sure that when you do, you do some everyday stuff too. I don't remember for sure hoe it was, but I ran some guys in Grand Rapids through a "real life" test track; normal driving, stomping on it, windows up and down, I even took them though the BK drive thru. From that you should your own opinion and decide what you want.

As far as this system goes, I'm very happy with it. I really wanted the ATS dual tail pipe system, which IMHO is the ultimate system on the market. I just couldn't justify the $1100 price difference, a guy could get this system and the juice comp w/attitude for that. I went ahead and got the 18" S/S tip with it and the grand total came to $350, not bad. I can honestly say I changed the whole system out in less than four hours without cutting anything and including the 20 minutes that a walked around trying not to be mad and break anything. I dropped the factory pipe on my head, had a lump for a good two weeks. Anyway, I did this by myself with the right side jacked up, it was so easy, it makes me wonder how good these other systems are and how many beers these guys drank to take so long...the hardest part is getting the fat front part off. For my truck, the system is five pieces, front(down) pipe, intermediate pipe, muffler, tail pipe, tip. It comes with an extension piece w/ hanger for the long box and a tailpipe extension for the dually, that if you put on a tip, you don't need. Just like any other system, it took a little fine tuning to get it just right, nothing hard though.

Now the good and bad...
It is loud, good and bad... I like it loud outside some people don't. It's not to loud inside though. I spent 30hrs in there a couple weekends ago, not bad at all...
The hangars aren't quiet as nice as the OEM ones, but they get the job done..no problems so far...
It's aluminized steel, to me this is good thing, it'll last, but it's not way over priced. I have yet to see an aluminized system rust through in under 8 years, most people won't even have their truck that long...
The worst thing about it is what it brings out in people that have payed $500-1400 for something that does the same thing. It's this or that, it's on back order, there's a typo in the description, it's made somewhere else and so on...bla,bla,bla..
The best thing is hearing people say how good it sounds and asking if it's one of the name brands. I love watching peoples jaws drop when I tell em' what I paid for it. Even better "hey, how come that sounds better than my....."

With all of that said, it does matter one bit to me what you run on your truck. However, I'm more than willing to share what I know and/or think...

Thanks for the info. Just got the Summit System installed over the weekend. The hardest part definitely was getting the old system out without cutting. Wanted the ability to put the stock exhaust back on if I was unhappy with the system. The only real problem I am having is trying to get clearance for the shock. I can't seem to position the pipe over the axel so as not to hit the shock or spare tire. Did you have this probem?? If so what did you do to correct it?? I plan on messing with this thing again as it is supposed to hit the 50's tomorrow before the next round of cold weather comes in.. Any help you could give, or anyone for that fact, would be appreciated.

I put the whole thing together loose, lined it all up and tightened everything up from the front to the back. It is a little bit of a pain to line up the tailpipe, as it is with other systems. It doesn't have quite as much bend in it as the stock system, so it will be a little closer to the tire and shock.

Thanks Ox! That is pretty much what I did as well, fitted everything loose, then tightened up everything. Boy was the tailpipe a bi$%@!! I had to put it up twice as I wanted to figure out where to cut it for the SS tip. Funny how it went up great the first time, but didn't want to cooperate the second time!! Hopefully I can get it resituated tomorrow and away from that shock. Thanks again for the insite.

4X4: If it ends up being too loud INSIDE, move the tip out a few inches. It makes a big difference! I gave myself some headaches at first. I'm sure you may have said something by now, but I just wanted to through that out FYI for you and others.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware that you could move the tip out to help quiet the exhaust on the inside. At this point I am not sure if it is too loud or not. It is definitely quieter than my mustang was, the wife doesn't find the Summit system intrusive either (I guess I can keep it!!). I just think I have been used to quiet exhausts for so long, I don't know what is too loud. Hoping to hear others' trucks with 4" exhaust this weekend to see if this one seems in check. Only downfall is, I can't really move the tip too much further out as I cut the tailpipe so the tip would look nice and clean with no signs of the 4" on the inside. I'll have to look at that. Maybe I'll take the tip off and put on one of the spacers that I didn't need that came with the kit and take it for a ride. I assume there is a certain point where you can keep extending the tip, but not hear a difference???


Instead of welding the tip on, I through bolted it with stainless hardware. Looks like I am glad I did so I can make adjustments!! Speaking of adjustments, I was able to get the tailpipe moved away from the shock!!

Now that you have owned this exhaust for awhile, do you have any further comments on it regarding noise, installation, corrosion, etc.? I am trying to convince "The Minister of Finance" that we need a 4" exhaust. A $600+ exhaust is probably out (especially since I bought myself Bilstein's for Christmas), but a $400 exhaust might be possible.

I still like mine, I was gonna get some pics of it this weekend, but it snowed...I'll get some when it warms up.

Sorry for the late reply, didn't see this.
About my 4" Summit System. It held up great for the time I had it on the truck. Yeah, I goofed, it was just too darn loud for me.. at around 2,000rpms and up it was just too loud for me, not to mention acceleration, and I feared what it would sound like under load pulling our 10,000lb 5er. It was definitly much louder than stock, but kept trying to tell myself it wasn't that bad and I would get used to it. My ears would clog up on half hour trips as well. I had thoughts about dynomating the inside of the truck, but would cost more than a couple of mufflers. I decided that I would put the stock system back on, as I didn't cut it, and do some research on mufflers and maybe be able to put it back on in the Spring if I could find a quiet one. If not oh well, lesson learned, at least I was only out $300. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but I guess some like the noise, some don't. It sure did sound good on WOT runs, but wasn't practical for the long highway commute to work...

Welcome to the site!! The dyno day was an event in Denver where they put the trucks on a dyno to measure hp and torque at the wheels. It was a Ford and Dodge event, but they let us come out and play anyway. Not sure when the next one is though....I'd have to check out the powerstroke club site.

Get the 18" tip and adjust it to end past the body of the truck. Mine was killing me the first day too. I looked at some pics of an ATS system I took. I noticed the tips stuck out, so I moved mine out and it made a huge difference. Give it shot. You could stick one of those extra pieces on there to try it out before buying a tip...

Thanks for the feedback. I'm in my truck for a 1000+ mile road trip every month. Consequently, I don't want an exhaust that is too loud. The stock exhaust 'note' is nearly non-existent to my ears at 70-75 MPH. I'd like some noise, but don't want it too obtrusive.

Are you selling the system 4X4? I would like to try it on my truck. Wanna swap for the dynomax?

I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet on this system. But I'll let you know what I do with it in the Spring. I have to have a pipe "repaired" as I couldn't break the joint loose and had to cut it. At least I marked it so I know how the cut piece needs to be welded back on to the pipe.
