: GM- XM Radio Install
TazMan 09-06-2004, 08:44 PM I got the OEM XM radio from http://gmdieseltech.com. I read the directions in the comfort of my living room. No Problem! I have all the listed required tools, I went out to my truck with box in hand and went at it.
Getting to the back of my CD/Cassette/AM/FM radio was no problem. Removing the back wiring plugs was a bit more of a challenge w/o breaking anything. Swapped plugs around and fed the line down behind the glove box. Took me a while to figure out were the mounting bracket goes. The diagram is inverted. Opened up the headliner, needed a hex wrench to remove the sun visior, taped down the drilling template and popped a couple holes in the roof. That worked out perfect.
The line from antenna to xm box comes in 2 pieces. I did not figure out feeding th line behind the glovebox up to the side colum as discribed in the directions. I improvised.
Turned on the truck and no radio. re-read the instructions and found I made an error on the corrective wiring from the am/fm radio. I did not wire in the hot wire and ground wire I disconnected for the XM box. Undid the plugs (aggravating) rewired and put back the am/fm radio. turned on the power and no radio. Took test light and I did have power. Checked under the hood and I had popped the fuse. I inserted a new fuse and it popped. I then revered the ground and power lines, I had them revered. That was an error on the part of the directions.
Turned on the radio and I had the preview channel! I then put the truck back together and put away my tools... 3 hours total. Went into call XM and activate Monday (Labor Day) at 4pm Mtn time. Payed a 2 year subscription and 1 1/2 hours later it was operating.
http://xmradio.com has the channel listings services, products, etc.
I really like operating this from my steering wheel. I can change to my regular radio, cassette,CD, have presets, the sound is great! The other big plus is that there is not anything else added to my dash. I would rate this as a 2 out of 5 on how difficult this add on was. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
I would be more than happy to help anyone with any questions on this project.
dmaxalliTech 09-06-2004, 09:37 PM Tazman, glad you got it working ok, I was unaware of the incorrect instructions but I will have to note it.
markzrt1 09-07-2004, 02:11 AM How do you go about preventing rust where you pop thru the roof? How much was the kit?
Hired Gun 09-07-2004, 08:21 AM Sounds great. I like XM, but I wish there were more channels worth listening to. Some of it is crap. Now if these stereo places would develop a box that will fit behind the seat of a crew cab!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
somekevinguy 09-07-2004, 10:23 AM You can get it here for only $278. Cheapest place I have found.
http://www.gmaccessories.net/todeychevrolet/
Also on the product page they have install instructions in pdf format with pictures and everything. I paid $333 for mine before I found this place.
TazMan 09-07-2004, 10:39 AM Markzrt1-
The directions say to apply anticorrosion compound (GM part # 12346225). I dabbed on some rustolium. Prices for the kit are all over the board. As posted in this string, $278 to $400+. It seemed the after market kits do not included everything or work thru the factory equipment.
I like how this box fits behind the glove box. Leaves more room for all my 'junk' I have to carry along. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
jbplock 09-07-2004, 11:40 AM Anyone know if the GM XM kit will work with the 6-CD Head Unit? The comment at the Todey Chevrolet (http://www.gmaccessories.net/todeychevrolet/productDetail.aspx?ProductID=170641) link states "Will not work with vehicles equipped with code UM7 radio" Anyone know what the UM7 radio is?
baimpala 09-07-2004, 04:28 PM From Helms:
RPO Description
UM7 Radio AM/FM Stereo, Seek/Scan, Clock, ETR
Sounds like a base model to me.
Dennis
jbplock 09-07-2004, 04:35 PM Thanks Dennis!
somekevinguy 09-08-2004, 01:04 AM Yeah that is the base model. I just got and installed my XM system today and I have the Bose model with the 6 disk changer. I just used some Maxima chain wax for my anti corrosion compound. It is basicly just cosmoleen. I used to work at a Nissan dealership and the factory stuff we used seemed to be about the same stuff. I don't know what happened with Tazman's instructions. I followed the ones that came with mine and I had no problems ie. blown fuses or no power. Also make sure you call the dealer activation number that comes with instruction and tell them you want GM 3 month trial. That way you get 3 months for free. I am always looking to save a buck so this is very important to me. $30 is $30. They will offer you a regular activation but you have to tell them about the GM 3 month trial. You need a 5/8" drill for the antenna hole which is a pretty big drill. I have a big drill set and didn't even think about it but when I went to get it I found out my set only went up to 1/2". It was even the biggest size that Home Depot had. A step bit aka Uni bit is another alternative.
TazMan 09-09-2004, 06:51 PM I must be dislecsic... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif

txguppy 12-17-2004, 01:05 PM How do you "direct enter" Xm channels or set presets, it would be a pain to scroll up and down through 100 channels?

check out www.proboxrocks.com or www.subthump.com
somekevinguy 12-18-2004, 12:13 AM I just used a small pick to push tab down on the pins and they pulled right out. You set the XM presets the same way you set them for the regular radio.
somekevinguy 12-18-2004, 12:36 AM gmpartsdirect still sells it for $333. I don't know what happened with Todey. If you got some time on your hands you can go to gmaccessories.net and look through the hundreds of dealers for the best price. I looked through about 10 before i found that great price at Todey but unfortunetly they jacked up their price.
txguppy 12-30-2004, 10:11 AM Does this xm kit give station, artist, channel info?

04gmcmax 04-29-2005, 03:13 PM Talked to one of my stealers yesterday. I was quoted $375 installed. Have an appointment on Wed to get hooked up. guess it helps when they know I'm looking to get two more vehicles in the next two months.
wishforit 05-01-2005, 10:42 PM now I know if I can do it anyone can!!! this was so easy I could of done it with one eye opened. In between running a round and doing odds and ends, it took me about 1 good hour. the tool to take the wires out says to use a special tool, well I did have that so I used a sewing needle worked out and got the job done. because i'm in california I have to wait to setup with XM. I already have XM in my car tried online and this is the only thing that has been hard, LOL.......
