While driving home from a trip last night, I noticed the battery light barely glowing. The voltmeter was indicating 14 volts, the lights were bright and nothing else seemed to indicate a problem. I checked the batteries today and both are at 12.8VDC. This occurred out of the blue as I have not made any changes to the electrical system recently. Anyone have this problem and how did you fix it?
Note to moderators: I did a search on this topic and found the exact problem, but that thread was closed for some reason, so here it is again.Edited by: Kartattack

I would lean toward the alternator. I know when mine went out the Dmax ran quite a bit louder. Dunno why. My .$02 Nick

Do you have dual alternators? if you do (like me) it can be a regular occurance..
scan it and see what comes up..Edited by: Diesel Power

Nope, no dual alternators. I'll check for codes tonight.

Sometimes you will get a weak light when a few of the output rectifier diodes in the alt fail reducing its output. Get alt tested as It may be in early failure. Edited by: snoman

Buddy of mine had the same problem on his '03 2500HD 6.0 gasser. He's a stickler for warranty work so took it back to the stealer. They replaced the instrument cluster after checking everything else. Fixt. Service writer indicated this was not the first one they had repaired this way.

I checked it tonight and there are no codes. And the light is glowing with the truck not running! I guess I have to go to the dealer sometime. Anybody in the DFW area want to loan me stock wheels and tires for a couple of days?

Dropped it off today and they say, 'it's a bad instrument cluster, we'll have to send it out for repair. That will take a couple of days.'
The draw is very slight and I need the truck for the weekend, so I told them put it back together and I'll bring it back on Monday after I unsuccessfully argued for a replacement vice repair.

I get GMPP with new trucks until all of the bugs are worked out and they provide for a loaner car if vehical is in shop more the 2 hours for repair.

They offered a loaner car, but I need the truck this weekend. I'll drop it off Monday and get the loaner then.

Follow-up: Dropped it off Monday for repair and got a rental (1500 crew
cab). Picked it up Tuesday. Light was out, but WTF?
Where's my tranny temp gauge? Oil pressure gauge maxes out at
80...hour meter shows 1100 hours (in 21K miles!)...this isn't even a
diesel cluster! Back in Wednesday and picked up today. The
right cluster is installed, the battery light doesn't glow, and now the
high beam indicator doesn't burn my retinas at night (old cluster was
supposedly updated, but it didn't fix it...tied in with the battery
light?). All is again right in my world.
