: Making it loud!!
peterbilt400 09-06-2004, 08:00 PM I just bought a '98 slt laramie 24 valve short bed, loaded. The odometer just rolled over 100k.I don't quite have 3k on it yet but let me tell you what, this S.O.B will get up and boogy down the hiway!!! I already got a speeding ticket. From a dead stop,on a hill, the cop clocked me at 53 in just about 50 yards.I wasn't paying to much attention to the speed, but the tranny didn't even shift out of 2nd gear.Man,what a powerhouse!!!.I got a question for all you pro's.I't's already got a banks muffler on it but what can a guy do to make it LOUD.I mean wake up the neighbors at 6:00 in the morning loud.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gifAny help will be appreciated. This is the first diesel i'v owned.I'v drove alot Fords and GM diesels. They don't even come close to the Cummins.
mikmaze 09-06-2004, 08:19 PM dunno how lousd it would be but an exhaust coutoff installed right where the turbo downpipe makes its first bend to travel hoizontal under the truck should do the tric with a bend welded onto the cutoff pointing straight to the side of the truck, that way you would have only about 3 - 4 feet of pipe containing the sound so it would all get out in a hurry! on the inlet side of makin noise abig ole whashable air filter and no box should let everyone hear that turbo suckin air. still not loud enough? try burning more in the chambers, more air and fuel via a box or two tellin that motor who's boss.
Straight pipe it. Loose the muffler.
I love it... people have no second thoughts about buying a Dodge with 100,000 miles on it....

peterbilt400 09-07-2004, 05:59 PM Thaks fellas,I'll give the straight pipe and the air filter trick a try. I'll let you know how it turned out.
Dodge-5.9 09-08-2004, 05:59 AM yeah straight pipe it filter and lose the silencer ring in the turbo.
btw, instead of buying a $200+ filter kit, just get a cone K&N with a 4inch opening put a piece of pvc pipe in the end of the filter and clamp it on the stock air tube minus the air box. $60-$70 compared to $200+ and works just as goodEdited by: Dodge-5.9
peterbilt400 09-08-2004, 06:55 PM Whats involved in taking out the silencer ring? I heard all you Texas boys have trucks that sound like a BIG RIG!!! I drive one all day long and i love it.The louder the better. Thanks
mikmaze 09-08-2004, 07:43 PM take a look at HOOT's last and or any post and click the link to his pics and info on his Dodge, he has a lot of photo's on the turbo silencer ring gutting. Don't be surprised how much it takes to get that first ring cut as the boys at Dodge put it together to stay together. A stiff knife blade works good and then either a rotozip or hand file to take off the final ridges. What you end up with is a thin wall tube that fits the stock rubber elbows with no restrictions. You also will have a pile of plastic about 3 lbs that ya don't need anymore!
peterbilt400 09-09-2004, 05:27 PM I appriciate the help. I got to pokin around and my '98 don't have a silencer.Just a bent flex tube coming out of the box and into the turbo. I think i am going to try the whole saw on the box trick. If that dont make it loud i'll just take the exaust off at the manifoldhttp://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil%20Smile.gifThanks for the input guys
Big P 09-09-2004, 07:06 PM The ring is inside the turbo. Take off the bent flex tube and you will see it.
The 3/4" wide ring comes out by popping the big internal snap ring.

peterbilt400 09-10-2004, 04:10 PM Hey hoot and Big P, Found it and it is what Hoot call's A.W.O.L!!! Sounds great. Now for the air cleaner mod. You guy's are great. Thanks
mikmaze 09-10-2004, 06:01 PM hoot you don't happen to have a b4 and after pic with the part missing so we can tell what comes out or is it already out in that pic??? slighlty confused but for a four day week it sure was a long one.

mikmaze 09-10-2004, 06:59 PM you da man.... how bout pic of seventh grade teacher that all the guys were gaga about? anyway that bit seems like it would smooth the flow to the inlet, taking it out looks like it leaves an area for mad turbulance and poor flow performance..... oh well if it makes it louder it must make it faster!
They are originally designed to run without the silencer ring. Only for non commercial applications does the ring get installed from what I hear.
broncrider0424 10-06-2004, 02:47 PM Hoot you are the man i have never even heard of anyone doing this before but i trust you, i popped mine off, and it sounds great!!!

Cummins600 10-10-2004, 10:36 PM Hoot... is the silencer ring on the 04 HO's that easy to remove??? I already added the K&N (too late for the cone and pvc advice) but that made it a heck of a lot louder. If it's the same steps I am going to give it a try.
All you do is remove the internal snap ring by getting under it with
the blade of a small screwdriver and popping it out of the groove. Once
the snap ring is out the silencer ring falls right out.
Xenon 10-20-2004, 08:06 PM Can this silencer ring be put back in if need be? And just how much louded is it over stock?
vortecfcar 10-20-2004, 09:43 PM It can be put back in, it's a little bit louder... not really whiney louder, more wuuuussshhhh louder.
Cummins600 10-20-2004, 11:39 PM I took my silencer ring out....and then I put it back in. With the other mods I think it sounds great when you take off from the line, but once I get enough rpm's it sounds kinda weird... Anyway, it came out easy and went back in just about as easy. I used a small screwdriver like Hoot said. That's all you need!!!
