http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Question.gif My Diesel has trouble starting without being plugged in below +20F and I am thinking of trading out the glow plugs for new ones. What do you all think are the best glow plugs to run in my 6.5 turbo and why??? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

Secondly, what other things do you think either my truck suffers from, or could help it start in colder wheather?

Injectors are the second thing that comes to mind. Injectors that seem fine when the truck is warm may still cause hard starts.

What oil do you use?

I switched to the 5W40 synthetic last winter and it spun over twice as fast.

When my truck need glowplugs, I am getting a set of these: http://www.accuratediesel.com/shop/7.html

I use 15w40. Penzoil? some yellow bottle that has a nice flexible spout on it to pour without funnel.

Check your exhaust while cranking, should see white smoke until truck starts, if you don't crank an injector line and watch it to see if your getting fuel or how long it takes to get fuel while someone cranks the truck for you. If you do see white smoke, and the fuel is there immediately, then its getting to the injectors, but your engine just can't get it hot enough to combust. This could be due either to lost compression, weak injectors, or heavily carboned/faulty glowplugs.

Faster cranking makes a big difference in starting cold. Also, the engine doesn't make so much noise till it warms up. If you have a Walmart around there, you might want to give the synthetic a try. It is about $12 per gallon.

You use 5w40 synthetic? Shouldnt it be 15w40? 5w40 is ok in the engine?

No one has a discussion on glow plugs?Edited by: Lotharius

As long as it is synthetic diesel oil, it should be ok. I wouldn't ever use anything other than 15W40 regular oil unless it was real cold.

Give the synthetic a try, it will save a lot of wear on the engine, batteries and starter.

9G's - single element - heat quickly, swell and burn open and on many re-heat or long heat cycles.

11G's - dual element - replaced 9G's, somewhat more durability, but will swell and burn open on reheats.

60G's - dual element - replaced 11G's, but require extended glow cycles to get same heat as 11G's, seldom open, never swell.

Made by AC, Autolite, Blue Point, Bosch, LDM, Lucas, etc.

LDM gives quick heat, will burn for brite for 8hours continuous, with no apparent deterioration.

Make sure your oil is Diesel rated, with the CH-4 API label for such, no matter what brand you use.

Pretty sure your owner's manual sugg 5w-30(?) for deep cold in winter - it's for ease of starting.

Check it out - correct me if that's wrong.

Hmmm, kennedydiesel has something called quickheat glow plugs that they say are better then 60g's. Are these the LDM's? Is this a bunch of hoey? Or is this the real deal.

Any other plugs anyone has heard of not mentioned above?

I think I many switch to the 5w40 synthetic when I replace the oil pan gasket on my truck. I tried a few weeks ago and learned I needed more tools, and a garage. (bah!)http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif
