How are you supposed to properly tension the power steering pump? There doesn't seem to be any place you can pry against to put tension on the belt.

If you see a square hole in the bracket insert half inch Jonson bar and tension belt .

had the same prob myself, I ended up using an open ended wrench on one of the bolts behind the pulley, it worked for me

I tried using the bolts behind the pulley but they would just loosen up. I got it done but the way I had to do it is kind of hard to explain.

I had to use a jack with my breakerbar balanced and proped up under the power steering pump to hold it in place. I put the jack under the truck and leaned my breakerbar against the frame and pointed up to the pump. I gently raised the jack until the bar was putting pressure on the pump. Then I went up top and pulled up on the pump and then went back down and put more pressure on it until it was tensioned enough.

There is probably an easier way but I didn't see it.

them thing are a pain to keep tensioned . got all kinds of bolts to hold it from going some where and nothing good to pry on. i use a alignment punch in one of the slider adj. holes to pry the pump sideways. like you say it ain't easy.

Here's what I did to tighten mine. I cheated a bit though.
I took a tow strap (the kind with a hook) and attached it to the bracket that attaches directly to the power steering pump. Then I wrapped the other end around a tree and gave it some slack. I grabbed a wrench, stood /jumped on the tow strap and tightened the bolts at the same time.
They are pretty snug now.

personally i just get a ratcheting tie strap and hook it too the front of the pulley where you would put the puller too take the pulley off the pump and to a part of the engine compartment and ratchet away till the belt is tight then i just tighten the bolts easy to do for monkeys

I managed to get the wrench on one bolt but against the center shaft in such a way it didn't loosen the bolt much, once tight I retightened this bolt fully but the ratchet strap idea sounds good, shall be trying that next time;)

I did the same thing... basically. i parked on a ratcheting strap with the front tire ran the strap up the fender and to the pump. Then loosened up the pump, ratcheted the belt real tight, then tightened up all the bolts. it worked.

while doing this watch out for the top bolt at the front of the engine for a stress crack thru the power steering bracket. had to weld up two so far.
