I just bought a 05 2500 HD 4x4 LT Crew. Was gonna do some minor mods, but was told by a dealer that the oil on the K&N air filters have blown up the top end of the duramax. Anyone know about this? Or know of what air intake/filter system I can use safely?

I've got an 05 2500 HD 4x4 LT Crew cab Duramax(LLY). This is my first diesel. I do alot of higway driving and will be pulling a fifth wheel trailer at times. I'm interested in adding a new intake and exhaust system, a programmer and display such as the one from Edge Performance and the "Attitude" display. Would like to have anyone's opinion/advice. I want more power torque especially , and at lower rpm's. Takes a lil bit for this turbo to kick in. What other mods would I have to make, to prevent any damage to stock parts, like Allison tranny or rear end?
Thanks for your help.

Do a search on the forums for LOTS and LOTS of information on air filtration. More than you could possibly have ever thought to ask and then some. Edited by: Hound

Have never been a fan of K&N type filters. even with the oil they allow several micons larger particals to enter the engine than most stock filters. I have found that the Fram stock replacement filter is just as good and allows more cfm of air than the K&N can.
Stock filters allow no larger than 3 micon particals to enter engine. K&N allows 5 to 6 micon sized particals to enter engine.
When doing any mods to engine you have to make sure that you don't exceed the capabilities of the rest of the drive train. If you are moding the engine mod the tranny at the same time so that it will apply more pressure to the plates (if auto trans) to help hold against added power.
There are many systems on the market. You need to decide exactly what and how you want the truck to perform. Banks Turbo has an excellent product as well as does many others. You picked a good place to ask your questions. Believe it or not you can go to the dealer and purchase mod chips that will recompute both engine and tranny at the same time. they can be a good source. If there is an RV or Medium duty truck dealer close by they can offer good advice. Even some of the heavy truck repair shops are getting into it (Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbuilt, International, Volvo, etc..)Edited by: Good Sam'

Hey guys
Thanks for the advice, this IS a great place to come for what seems to be anything I oculd possibly think of. It's cool that you guys are willing to give your opinion and advice.
I have searched more and decided to stay stock on the air intake. I don't plan on doing much modifying to my truck, I really just don't like the low-end torque, I want more, and I want it sooner in the "powerband" or rpm range. I want to beat any and all "stock" trucks out there, without a worry, that is it mostly.
I've really been interested in Banks exhuast, and Edge/Attitude.
Anyway, thanks for all the help. Thanks a lot.
