: transfer case
new member.. I recently lost my transfer case in my 2001. The dealership has been trying to order me one and I understand that they have a backorder on these and I can't get one. Has anyone heard of trouble with these? It leaked out all of fluid and now sounds like threshing machine. It has 80,000 on it.I looked on this site and found some info and it sounds like they have a problem with leakage on some units. Anyway, just curious if anyone else knew anything.
BassinRVer 09-07-2004, 01:02 PM I have not heard of these leaking or going bad.
TShrum1 09-07-2004, 07:16 PM Hi,
Yes indeed they are having trouble with the transfer cases, as I was told today by my dealer there is a bushing inside the case and it rubs the hole in the pan and leaks out all the fluid but CHEVROLET does not admit that there is no problem even though you can not buy a new one, my dealer is going to rebuild mine for about 1400.00 and he hopes to have the parts by this trhursday, my truck had 103,000 miles on it and just today my brother who has the 01 duramax/allison with less mile called to tell me while pulling his boat home the transfer case leaked all of its oil out on to his boat (real happy) I toold him about mine and he was going out to see if he had a hole in his.

snoman 09-08-2004, 07:17 AM I would be looking in bone yards for one myself. This is why you check its fluid every time you change engine oil.
you are right...I should have been checking fluid. The only excuse I have is when I bought my truck it included a lifetime oil and lube. I feel that the dealership has some responsibility in this since I have had them change oil every 3000 miles and that should have been checked when the oil was changed.

Very good point, read the maintance recommandations for your vehical and see if it states tha Tcase lube should be checked when changing oil. If so, you may have them. (you will have to stink about it though)
TShrum1 09-08-2004, 06:26 PM Update guys now pay attention ok?
The faulty transfer case arises from a bushing rubbing a hole through the half case not the pan therefore telling me to check the fluid when I change oil (which I do) will not help this problem happens and when the hole comes into the half case the oild leaks out!
Hope you don't think I'm in a bad mood here but it did just happen to me and then for some of you guys to say well thats what happens when you don't check the fluid level when you change the motor oil and yet I do and the fact you can not buy a new transfer case from Chevrolet anywhere other than parts makes me think they have a problem! Not to meantion my brothers 01 did the exact same thing this past weekend except since he was pulling his boat he could see the oil all over the boat knowing he had a leak!

ShumDit 09-08-2004, 06:47 PM You're right ~ merely chkg the fluid level may not catch it until the penetration is complete at which time it could be an immediate loss depending on the size of the perferation. I'm aware of folks having this issue and would think GM would be also. I understand the defective part isn't spared? Wondering what I'm gonna do when my time comes? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif
snoman 09-08-2004, 07:12 PM I would think this hole would take some time to fully occur and would not result in the complete lose of oil overnight as it would take time for a small hole to appear and then get larger. Also 2 to 3 quarts of oil cannot disappear in just a few days without leaving some big puddles or oil "spray" tracks under car/truck if it leaks at speed.
TShrum1 09-08-2004, 09:12 PM Oil Puddle?
One would think that you would not loose oil that fast and it would puddle up under the truck, My driveway has no, none, not even a drop on it, my office drive is also completely clean so one of two things has happened.
1 Some nice person has been cleaning my driveway and office drive as well.
2 All the fluid leaks out very fast while the unit is going down the road.
Since I have stated that my brothers truck sprayed oil on his boat this past weekend and I might add his boat is a forty eight foot cigarette and he said the entire bottom was covered makes me think it happens really fast.
I guess the only way to really make sure nothing is leaking or spraying out one should crawl under his truck every morning and every night but you see I thought since I bought another Chevy that was not necessary but mmm maybe I'm wrong!

Latest update........my transfer case came in and was installed on Friday. It cost me $1221. I am glad to get it over with. I thought that the outcome was fair. They gave me the case at their cost and installed with no labor cost.Since I have 83,000 on truck, it wasn't covered under warranty. It sure felt better not having to crawl under truck and put in fluid. I hope the new one was the updated version. I was so happy to get it I didn't even ask.

Does make you wonder though if GM quietly greased their palm on that one otherwise why would a dealer do it for cost on a truck long out of warranty? If it is a design defect, it should have been fixed for free.
dmaxalliTech 09-14-2004, 09:20 AM believe me, they made money on the deal. No question about it.
As for the rubbing, there is a anti rattle spring that goes between the pump and the case. If that spring is missing, the pump rattles in there and eventually wears through the case. Seen it before a few times.. GMCSID had posted pics of it somewhere before.

So this is a factory defect then if it is missing. Makes me glad that I have a a BorgWarner 4401 xfer case in my 2000 K3500.
dmaxalliTech 09-14-2004, 11:14 AM hate to call it a defect, but if the case has never been apart and its missing... assembly errorhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

If the part was not assembled properly, it is a factory defect anyway you cut it.
