: Stock trans learning?

Hi

I got a stock 03 trans with Edge Attitiude, and I hear mention about the transmission having to learn about how you drive or somthing like that. How long do your have to drive it in a certain level before it shifts good without a long hesisition? If I switch attitude levels, does it lave to learn again? How long? What does it learn. If I drive easy does it learn something different than if I drive hard? Is there anything I should or can do to help it learn? Any advise or comments welcome.

Thanks Terry

Terry,

If you still have the booklet that came with the Edge Attitude, there is a pretty good description about the transmission learning in it.

Here is what it says:

"The Allison transmission is a "Smart" transmission. That means that it pays attention to how smoothly the transmission is changing gears, and modifies the shifting to improve driveability. When the motor delivers more power (by adding the Juice module), the transmission has to 're-learn' how to shift. After first installing the Juice module, you may notice rough shifting. The best way to re-teach the transmission is to set the truck in the power level you will be using most of the time. Then set out to drive, some city, some highway, varying the driving and the speed. Make sure you shift through each gear 20 to 30 times. A good rule of thumb would be 100 to 200 miles. Remember that the truck must go through each gear 20 to 30 times. You will notice the shifting becoming better, and your truck responding better to the additional power as you go through the learning cycle."

Hope it helps,
Dennis

Hi

Ok if I drive it in level 3 for the recommended time. Then if I change to level 5, does it have to learn all over again? What do you do if you run normally on level 3, then some guy at a light thinks deisels are slow. I put it on level 5 to smoke him, does it hurt anything? Or does it remember what it learned from level 3?

Terry,

It pretty much has to learn in each level. Even better, if you drive in level 3, then shift to level 5 and let it re-learn there, when you shift if back to level 3, it will need to re-learn again. There is only one memory bank to be populated, so every change in power will have to repopulate the bank.

Although there are some people that run their truck in level 5 with a stock transmission, you are risking damage to your transmission at that level. The manual even states that you should not use levels 4 or 5 unless you have a built transmission.

One other thing you might think about that I don't know if Dennis has tried...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

I did give mine a try in Level 5 with the Beta software to get Edge some data. Made me quite nervous so I didn't push it to the 5th gear shift. I noted a SIGNIFICANT lag on the shifts. According to one of the other members here, without a beefed trans and the re-learn procedure accomplished, the de-fuel on Level 5 between shifts is really noticeable, so you have to use the no de-fuel option on the Edge to get it up to par.

No defuel on a locked shift to 5th gear on an LLY with the Edge set to Level 5 should definitely be enough to zing the trans...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

You might get away with it on your LB7 for awhile, but it won't be long. Ask MaxPower about that...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

That being said, with the de-fuel on, mine actually seems to run better in Level 3 than Level 4, but I've not driven it enough in Level 4 to let it learn there either. I don't have the $3600.00 for a trans in my pocket, yet...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gifEdited by: Zeeb

Zeeb,

You're a lot braver than I am. I'm not worried about destroying something (but of course, I'd rather not). I play so I don't have a problem paying if something blows up. I just don't want to be without my toy for very long. I'm planning on giving Eric a ring sometime next summer since I'll be moving close enough to do the run in a day. That will be tough enough.

I went up to level 3 a couple weeks ago, and at first I didn't notice the defuel between shifts, but now I notice it a lot. It pulls pretty hard, but the defuel is very noticeable. I'm set to defuel all locked shifts and pretty much always drive in t/h. Certainly a lot of fun. I think I'll be able to hold out until next summer, but that is a long time away. . . http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif

tewitt1949,

I also have an 03 (Juice/Attitude). Installed for about a week. I leave mine on level 4 all the time. When I first put the juice on it shifted very bad. I would say I have been about 200 miles and there is a night and day difference with the shifting now. Shifts just about like stock, with it getting better everyday.Edited by: MADDMAX
