How often do you change your transmission filter on your Allison?

The external or internal?
I change my external spin-on filter every oil change (approx. every 5K mi). Some change every other oil change.
The internal filter is only supposed to be changed upon overhaul of the tranny. But, some people replace it when they do a flush...

I change my external every oil change, mine being about 7500 miles, and the internal about every 25,000 miles.

Spoke with the allison rep from Denver and he said you don't need to replace the internal filter unless you do any repairs on the tranny. He recommended only changing the spinon filter.

Thanks for information. I am new to forum and had my spin on filter changed once at dealer (5800 miles) They charged me $121.00 so I want to do myself from now on. That charge included $30.00 for fluid...may be a real newbe question, but do you lose much fluid when you change the spin on? You don't replace all fluid do you?

If you don't add any oil when you change the spin on it won't change the dipstick reading at all. They robbed you!
The filter is under $10.00. Do you feel abused now?

Yes, I have been dealer abused! The "filter asm" was $31.58! and the labor $60.00. When I crawled under and saw the filter is so easy to access I knew it was time to get on this forum and learn to do it myself! I see that many change the spin on with each or every other oil change...what is the recommended mileage for draining and replacing the transmission fluid?

I think i read in my owners manual change the filter (external) and drain fluid and replace at every 25k miles.

Dear God! That is the worst screwing I have ever heard. Takes longer to get the creeper out, or put on the lift, than it does to change the filter and add a pint of fluid.

I agree with superboy95 and RanaExcavating.
This is how they get the "Stealer" name in this forum. That is outrageous.
You can get the OEM spin on filters from the forum vendors for around $12 a piece + shipping of course but you get 5 at a time amongst other things and it's still waaaaaaay cheaper than at the "stealership"...

Even if you had Transynd in there, it shouldn't cost that much....

Fluid wise, you won't lose more than a pint like superboy mentioned. Just what's in the filter plus a little more... Just add that amount thru the dipstick tube.

Do it yourself... It's piece o' cake... Just remember not to throw away the magnet on the filter when you change it.

I'll be flushing mine every 30-40k for my own personal insurance, oh, and changing the internal filter.

Fill the new filter with new ATF before you install it.
Now do a search for "fuel filter" I'll bet it's ready to be changed also.
