: Does not Shift
allie 09-05-2004, 12:13 PM My truck 2004.5 lly 9000 miles on it has been sitting for 2 weeks. Prior to this I installed 4" exhaust removed the Cat, added an Edge w/attitude. I have only run it on level 1 and level 2 so far.
Yesterday I started it up, backed out of the parking spot, put it in Drive and when it should have shifted it popped in to neutral. The shifter was still Drive the DIC indicate something like "Shifting Inhibited"
I stopped, put it in Park, then back to Drive and I pulled up but the truck would not shift. The engine light, ABS, Brake Indicator came on and the DIC "Service Brake System"
I let the truck sit for a few minutes same indications.
I applied and released the parking brake sveral times went through the gears, same indications.
Disconnected the batteries for 30 minutes, same indications.
Disconnected the Edge, same indications will not shift.
Can anyone help me?
coyotekid 09-05-2004, 01:00 PM I had a very similar thing happen with an '03 2500HD, but it was a 6.0 gasser with the 4L-80E tranny. It ran perfectly normal, then I put it in Park, and it would not engage and go into any gear. I had it towed to the dealer, and by this time it "healed up" and acted perfectly normal again. No codes were set, and they sent me on my way. About 250 miles later it did the same thing again, but this time the tranny was completely ruined. When they dropped the pan at another dealership, the first clutch pack, a bunch of sludge, and numerous metal shavings came out! The truck had only 9700 miles on it and was not abused in any way. This probably doesn't help much, but I guess if it was me I'd get it to a dealer as soon as possible if you haven't already gone that route.
dmaxalliTech 09-05-2004, 03:14 PM This is a very common issue with these trucks and is addressed by a TSB to correct "converter drainback" Depending on your dealer will depend if they need to verify it happening or take your word on it and fix it.
Mike L. 09-05-2004, 05:49 PM Pull the Edge off for a while and see if the problem goes away. I don't think this has anything to do with drainback. I will say once again; all you guys need to buy a good code reader scan tool for a couple of hundred bucks. Disconnecting battery will not clear an Allison code.

What is a good code reader to get?
Yes, I did disconnect the Edge. Same indication, will not shift and there are all these brake system failures on the dash. It is currently sitting at work until Tuesday.
dmaxalliTech 09-05-2004, 09:48 PM What a dumba** I am,, didnt read the part where you said you backed it up.... Hmm
OK, ignore my above comment, Mike L, you gotta slap me when I am stupid like that bro....
Yeah, pull the boxes and get the codes, start there
Mackin 09-05-2004, 09:57 PM Any code reader and clearer for the TCM will cost you more then a couple hundred bucks. I also doubt the Edge has anything to do with it.
Step one is get the codes read either at a AutoZone or return to stock and see your dealer.Whats your location perhaps someone with a Tech II or Quad tuner can read the codes. I would not erase the codes untill your sure of what caused the problem, although.

Mike L. 09-05-2004, 10:15 PM Auto-Xray sold by Autozone or Kragen work very well. Inova is another one that works very well. The guys at Transgo keep one of these in their trucks at all times. You don't need a Tech 11 or a Quad tuner for this purpose. By the way, both of these scanners are on sale now at below 200 bucks.

Do you sell these things?
If so how do I get in touch with you?

allie 09-09-2004, 07:30 PM Tuesday evening I finally had time to take a look at what was wrong with my truck. After sitting 2 weeks at work it made friends with a critter that climbed up on top of the transmission and chewed up the wiring harness to the tranny. Maybe it was the Ford that was sitting next to it!
After I soldered everything back together. I started it and all the messages were still there. I put in in gear to see if it would shift, that worked. I hit the brakes and all the brake messages turned off. Drove around to one of our other buildings and then the Check Engine light went out. Good.
I hooked up the scan tool and the only code it showed was P072A Speed Sensor not connected. Cleared it and it appears to be fine.
I am going to connect up the Edge now.
Thanks Allie
Forced Induction 09-11-2004, 09:17 AM Whick X-ray scanner is one most cost effective one to get. They have a 6000 model for $700. and alot of others. I assume they all can clear codes, just wanted to know what is the best one.

I've been looking for a bit since Mike L. mentioned that Auto-Xray.
According to what I understand, only the 6000 will read the CAN (Component Area Network) bus used on our trucks.
Do a little searching on the web for them. Checker sells them for $630.00 as well as my local NAPA, but I found one outfit on the web that's got them listed for $516.00...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

allie 09-13-2004, 08:42 AM Forced Induction,
I used a Genesis, not sure what model because I could not afford it about $3k I'm told.
I also have been looking at Auto-Xray but I'm not sure what model yet; maybe the 4000 or 5000.
I can not find any info on "Inova" that MikeL speaks of.
Good luck and keep me posted on what you find out. Like wise.
Allie
allie,
Yeah, the Genesis is closer to $4000.00 than it is 3...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
Part of the reason you can't find anything on "Inova" is that the company is actually "Equus/Innova", here's the web site:
http://www.iequus.com/
It doesn't look to me like they make anything that will read the CAN bus.
Again, Auto-Xray's EZ Scan 6000 appears to be the only available scanner for the CAN bus unless you've got a big chunk of change to spend. It's not clear to me that even the Auto-Xray will do TCM codes.
You can go direct to their web site for more info on the CAN bus and the 6000 scanner. If you find something else that will do TCM stuff, that would be nice, but right now it looks like one of the performance programmers set up for the TCM stuff is a bunch less money than a Tech II or Genesis...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
