: EGT readings are all wrong.

I hope some one has an idea of what is happening here.

I have had three different EGT type gauges. The Banks X-monitor, the Attitude and also the Autometer gauges.

Some times My Attitude gauge will be reading as high as 2100 and when it is that high it goes into a safe mode and I loose my Juice power. I had the same proglem with my Banks monitor also. And now the Autometer gauge is staying at 750 and may only move about 10 - 20 deg, but pretty much stays there.

Is there a set distance that the probes should be at. I have moved them all the way in and backed them out about 1/4". Same results. I have now moved to where the tips are now just past the fittings. And still the same problems.

Could I have over tightened the fittings and ruined the probles?

I am at a loss here.

Are you using the probes that came with each gauge setup?

Generally, if the probe is set such that the end of it is about in the middle of the exhaust passage, that's okay.

Edge had a few problems with bad probes, and now they have a different type probe. They said it's just a different supplier, which it is, but it may have been due to the problems they were occasionally getting.

Can't say about the Banks or the Autometer.

If you check the directions for the Autometer, they specify that you use the included probe and wire. This is because the probe and wire length are matched. While I'm not really up to speed on the latests stuff, all the early pyrometers were extremely sensitive to changes in either the probe or wire length. That was because of the tiny amount of electrical power produced by the probe could be affected by wire length, and of course the wrong probe would put out a different power range.

Now I do have an Autometer gauge that goes in for stealer visits and I use the Edge probe with that, but it's a pretty good wire length increase as well. I'm not able to directly compare them, but the Autometer seems to read about 50 to 100 degrees higher at 70 MPH on the freeway over what the Attitude does.

But that's just my $0.02 worth...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

I have noticed that my Autometer reads about 50 100 deg higher than the Attitude also.

I am using the original parts that came with the gauges.

Thanks for the help.

Maybe the Attitude is set it up that way so it shuts down before it reaches a temperature they consider to hot, you know like a built in safety margin.

The Attitude does have a shut down when it reaches I believe approx. 1500 deg., but I don't think my EGT's are at an all time high of 2200 deg..

I also have noticed that when I park the truck outside for a couple of hours the Autometer gauge goes back down to mormal starting temps and after about 10 - 15 minutes of driving it is stuck back at the 750 level.
