I'll be picking my truck up this coming Friday (Sept 10th)! Yahoo! In the first weekend of ownership I'll be driving it about 1500 miles unladen on the highway. Going to make sure to vary the rpms and the load and overall keep the rpms pretty low. When I get back home (1500 miles) I was planning on changing the oil first thing, as I normally do on new cars that I get. However, I know that some car companies have been putting break-in additives in the oil and that if you then change the break-in oil early that ends up being detrimental to engine life. Does anyone know if they put any special break-in additives in the Cummins oil or if it's just normal oil? Thanks!

Never heard of anything special in the factory oil. My thoughts and practice is to just run the heck out of it and change it according to the published recommendations.

On mine I used to change around 5K and initially used a little oil. Now I go about 8K with almost no oil consumption. There is about 56K on the truck. I just looked at the oil with 3K of heavy towing on it. It's full and about as clean as when I put it in.

Good luck with your truck.

Ted,

Good luck with your new truck. Since I ride motorcycles I'm a little cautious for the first change too. I believe the oil is not 'break in' and you can change at will with whatever the manual calls out. Been learning a lot from the regulars on the forum and got my filters from Genos Garage and bought Rotella 15-50. Had to buy a large catch pan so got a 16 quart model from parts store, proper sized filter end cap wrench and went to town at 2300 miles. A little spillage from filter but came off easy with judicious avoidance of the air conditioner wire. Anyways, 9 quarts in new catch pan, 3 quarts on garage floor. Exxon Valdez, please.....forgot to open the air relief hatch http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gifon the catch pan, so the oil was coming out so fast it overloaded the hole in the middle of the pan for the oil to drain in. I'll get better at this the next time.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

Thanks Hawkster and hoot! This thing holds 12 quarts? Yeowza, that's as much as my Jag. No wonder it can go so long between oil changes! Maybe I'll rethink my oil change duration once I get the thing broken in. Thanks for the info!
