I am considering purchasing a set of Hummer H2 chrome wheels for my new GMC 2500HD, I am also considering 285\70\17 tires and understand I might need to crank the torsions bars a couple turns (allthough my truck does have the snow plow prep package) and I know most people just trim the lower portion of the bumper a bit however my GMC has the painted lower portion and I would like to avoid trimming this at all costs (even if it means using smaller tires) I thought I had seen reference to moving the bumper slightly forward to gain clearance??? has anyone here done this with good results and what is involved??
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Here is an article on what is involved.

Steve,
I have done what you are about to do, I installed a set of H2s with BF Goodrich A/Ts the only thing I had to do is tie back the parking brake cable from pushing on the left front inner wheel well. I later cranked the front torsion bars 2-3 turns just to help level out the truck, but is was not needed for clearance reasons. If you go to 285/75/17s or 295/70/17s you will need to start trimming & modifing, you also loose even more torque at the wheels & speedometer miscalibration is more of an issue as well (minimal amounts...but worth mentioning).
Good luck, it looks right with those size tires on it, you'll see.
