: Oil filter for the 6.0L-- PF44 or PF59??

Recently, I purchased a 6.0L Suburban. I looked under the car and found the oil filter the truck had was a PF44 AC Delco. Being an avid car nut, I found this filter to be quite small compared to my LT1 Impala SS that uses a PF52. Taking it a step further, I figured my 6.0L is an LS1 of sorts and knew that engine was in the Vette and that there were UPF series filters for that as is the case for the LT1. I'm talking about the AC Delco Ultraguard filters.

So I finally got around to buying the shop books from Helm and in the book it says that the filter is a PF59. So I find myself scratching my head. The factory installed a PF44 into the Suburban, which is the same for the base LS1 Vette, Camaro, Firebird, yet the Helm book calls for a PF59.

If you use the AC Delco brand, what do you use in your 6.0L...a PF44 or a PF59?Edited by: Silvertwinkie

I always used a PF59 when I still had a 6.0 Silverado.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

Interesting. I wonder if the PF59s actually allow more flow since it's larger...and if so I suppose I should see if there is a UPF59 while I'm at it.

If you all think the UPF44 is just as good, then I won't bother.

Thanks for the info.

Holy cow! talk about Deja Vue all over again. I asked that very same question for the exact same reason. Except my other car was an 86 Regal T-Type which called for the PF47 and I used the PF52. BTW, I have a 96 Caprice LT1...love that car.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Hug.gif

Oh yeah, I use the A/C Delco filter exclusively on my B-Body and the larger PF59 on my wife's Sub. I would use the UPF59 if it wasn't such a PITA to get.

I agree the B-body cars really are great cars. I own three:

80' Delta 88
96' Caprice SS (LT1) my project modding car
96' Impala SS bone stock 4700 miles

Great fun!

I get UPF-52s for the '96s regularly.

I didn't know they made a UPF-59. I was happy with the UPF-44 for 2 reasons...the UPF-44 is a better filter than the standard PF-44, but also since the PF-59, being bigger hangs closer to the exhaust crossover pipe (which 1st oil change I burned the $hit out of my arm). http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

At any rate, I am wondering if the PF-59 would add any more heat to the oil being so close to the crossover and if that were not an issue, would the PF-59 be better for the engine than the smaller PF-44.

I appreciate all the info you all are sharing.

I only use the PF59 in my truck. Logic dictates that a bigger filter will be able to do a better job, so that's what I use.

The PF59 will work just fine for your 6.0L...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif

I went to pick up a filter for my 04 6.0 last week and the computer at the parts store came up with a PF46, there was no listing anywhere of a PF44 which was what was on my truck from the factory.
The PF46 looks identical to the PF44, I installed it and no leaks and oil pressure looks fine.

The parts guy seems to think that the PF44 has been replaced with the PF46 ??? can anyone confirm this ?? I guess I should call AC.

In the future I'll probably use the PF59.

FYI,
I contacted AC Delco with the following question, and here is their reply.
I guess now that it's documented and I have an engine failure while using a PF59 I'll get denied warrenty http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

...my question to AC..
I have a 04 GMC Sierra with the 6.0 L engine, the owners manual states a PF44 as the proper oil filter and this is what came on the truck however I can not find this filter, all information and this web site state that a PF46 is the right filter, has the PF44 been replaced with the PF46 ??
Also, I have been told that the PF52 will also work(longer filter but the same otherwise) is this information correct, can I use the PF52 filter with this engine?

..and their reply..
Thank you for writing ACDelco.
Thank-you for your e-mail Mr.Cornell regarding your 2004 GMC Sierra.
According to our record ACDelco oil filter PF44 has been replaced by the PF46. The PF46 is the oil filter that is now recommended for your vehicle.
The PF52 may be able to work with your vehicle, however we suggest you use the PF46.
If we can assist you further, please contact us at www.acdelco.com

Steve,
The PF59 is the alternate (longer) filter for the 6.0, not the PF52. The PF52 is for the LT1 engine and some early 5.3 apps(I think). That may have caused some of the apprehension in the AC Delco response.

pf59 fits the 99 and up (well, up to 03 anyway) 5.3,4.8,6.0 ....also fits the olds aurora....not that you care about that http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif

The pf52 (long) and pf47 (short) fit 4wd 350,305,4.3...

Pf1218 for the 2wd 350,305,4.3

And the Pf44 (and pf46) direct cross reference between the two...they fit the 03 and up 4.8,5.3,6.0.....along with the old quad fourhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif

As far as the gasket for the pf44,pf46,and the pf59 goes....the gasket is identical...2.43id, 2.73od....threads are 13/16-16

So, the way it looks, if you want to put the longer filter on the 03 and newer trucks, it should be just fine..
