Jared,

Her's how I do it...

1. Use a small oil filter metal strap wrench (or rubber) and unsrew the filter while holding a 1-quart measuring cup under the filter to catch the fluid that will drain out.

2. Drain the remaining fluid from the filter into the measuring cup.

3. Remove the magnet from the old filter and place it on the new filter.

4. Lube the gasket of the new filter, top off with new Dexron-III fluid and install the filter.

5. Add the difference in fluid between what you put in the new filter and what you caught in the measuring cup to the transmission fill tube.

6. Start the engine and check the "cold" fluid level...then get the tranny up to temp (160F) and check the "hot" fluid level.

I think that's it .. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

Hey Jared!

I'm new to the forum, but just have a small bit of advise. I was getting ready for a long tow with my camper and boat, and was facing a long haul to our destination. I had 26K on the odometer and needed a tranny fluid change. I couldn't get to the dealership to get an Allison filter, so I went to the local parts store and got a Wix. BIG MISTAKE!!! Really messed up the shifting! It felt like I had installed a race type shift kit. Anyway...be sure to use the Allison filter! Don't take the shortcut like I did!

The thing that puzzles me is in regards to Allisons F.A.Q.

I interperted there service advise as follows.

Whenever you change the spin on ( 7500) you also need to pull the drain plug in the pan and let approx. 7 quarts drain out. Then replace spin on and the 7 or so quarts.

The also state that you will never need to replace the internal filter unless overhauling your transmission.

This kinda makes since. If you change 7 quarts of fluid every 7500 miles you will always have clean fluid.

If somebody read the intructions differently, let me know.

ON EDIT:

Here is the quote from Allison. I beleive they added the bold print since I last read it. They are now telling us to follow GM service reccomendations, when before they had there own. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

<TABLE width="100%">
<T>
<TR>
<TD colSpan=2><A name=105></A>Q. Filters - How many filters are there and when do they need to be changed? </A></TD></TR>
<TR>
<TD width="5%"></TD>
<TD width="95%">A. The Allison 1000 Series™ uses two filters to maintain cleanliness of the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). There is a 'spin-on' filter that is externally accessible and is intended to be changed at each ATF change (see owners manual for recommended change intervals). Current P/N for this filter is 29539579. Because this is a relatively 'high pressure' spin-on filter, it is important to tighten the filter one full turn after the gasket contacts the transmission case. Also, there is a removable magnet between the filter and the transmission housing; care needs to be taken that the magnet doesn't get 'thrown away' with the old filter if it happens to stick to the old filter. Beginning with MY03, GM Truck is recommending that the spin-on filter (filter only; not transmission fluid) initially be changed at 7,500 miles. Following that, the filter and fluid should be changed at the recommended intervals.

The other filter is inside the transmission oil pan, and is intended to be changed only in the event of an overhaul.</P? td <> </TD></TR></T></TABLE>Edited by: Bronco

What's wrong with using the WIX? I changed mine this week and haven't noticed a diff? Should I be concerned? Nick

Did you reinstall the magnet? It blocks the holes.

The hole pattern was much different on the Wix and I think that the magnet was blocking the holes. I'm not sure if that is what directly caused the problem, but as soon as I took it back off and installed the Allison filter, all was corrected.

UPDATE Everything went well, only have one question, I only got about 10oz of old fluid in the drain pan... Is there somting wrong with that picture or did i just get lucky not to be coverd in tranny fluid? The tranny was cold when i did it if that makes any diffrence.....I drained the old filter also, with that ontop of what drained out from the tranny, would have been just enuf to fill the new filter, with maybe a drop or 2 extra.......I ran the truck around to get a good hot check, and the fluid level is fine, i added a splash of new fluid just to ease my mind....but anyway, thanks for all the help! made this first time alot easyer!!!!!!

THANKS AGAIN!!

Jared,

Perfect! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif ... 10oz sounds about right.. IICR, I also put about 8oz in the new filter and a few oz down the fill tube...

Also, as Bronco pointed out the first filter change (no fluid) is at 7.5k per GM... (Allisons recomendation used to say 5k). After the initial spin-on change at 7.5k (or 5k) the fluid and spin-on filter get changed at 25k/50k for severe/normal service.
