: Rough start, air in lines?

Good morning Everyone,

My '95 Burb has developed a rough start ever since I changed the fuel filter. What is the best proceedure for bleeding the excess air in the fuel system? Is there an air release valve ontop on the fuel filter? Should I just drain the petcock?

Thanks,

Looks like we have the same truck, so I spose this oughta work for you as well as it does for me.

When I change the fuel filter and need to bleed the air outta the filter housing, With the engine off, do the following:

Find a little rubber hose that slips over the nipple on top of the filter housing. Loosen the black nipple by turning counter clockwise. Put the hose on the nipple, and stick the other end of the hose in a pop bottle or quart jug.

Pull the lid off the fuse box on the driver's side of the engine compartment. On the inside of the lid there's a diagram that labels the fuses for ya. Pull the fuel solenoid relay out. On mine, it's the relay on the bottom left corner of the circuit board. Jump the bottom right to top left fuel solenoid pins on the board with a paperclip.

The lift pump oughtta kick in and start spitting fuel outta the rubber hose and into the quart jug. Do this for a while till no air bubbles come out anymore. If you run out 1/2 a quart of fuel, that should be great plenty. Then pull the paperclip out, tighten up the nipple on top of the filter housing, and she should fire right up.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gifEdited by: w_huisman

I have been wondering about this too!

How would you do it on a filter housing with no top bleed screw?

I haven't had a problem and assume that if you run the lift pump long enough it eventually pushes any air out the petcock or return line.

Is this true or is there a better way?

Sas, your's doesnt have a top bleed screw on the filter? Is it a van? All the trucks have one, comes new with the filter, only the vans have the upside down, under the driver's seat, sealed filter with water drain on the bottom, is that what you have? There is a bleed on the base above the filter on these, but they usually clear the air out pretty good themselves.

On a 95 you shouldn't have to go thru all that jazz to get the lift pump to run after changing the filter.

With the engine off, shift the tranny to Drive, and turn the key as if you are starting. If it is quiet where you are you will hear the lift pump running to fill up the fliter can.

That's true, but it only pumps while the glow plugs are cycling.

I would jump the common to lift pump wire on the fuel pump relay not fuel solenoid. with the bleed open till it girgles then build pressure and release air till none comes. If your quick you don't make a mess.

Hm..., i open the screw on the filter just till fuel comes out and have the drain on the "T" open at the same time, start it up, shut the one on the filter after fuel comes out and when she's running good shut the one on the "T". I'm not saying this is right as i do tend to make a mess.
