95geo 09-03-2004, 10:05 AM i was checking an escalade out on the way in this morning and was just checking ebay for the same thing, some of my questions...
do you need another antenna, does it still recieve xm, are you able to adjust the eq bass/treb? is it a touch screen?
anyone have insight?
I've been wondering the same thing!?!
Longstreet 09-03-2004, 10:23 AM There is a thread at the GM-Trucks.com forums in the "Audio/Electronics" section. Explains what is needed for the conversion.
mwgasman 09-03-2004, 11:23 PM Howdy,
I have done this conversion. I did not use the JP Customs kit. I ended up spending about $400 less than that kit.
Apparently there is a new nav headunit (called non-luxury) that does not require an amp change or wiring mods in our trucks. I have not seen this unit and was done with my conversion before i discovered it. This WILL NOT work if you don't have a BOSE system.
I did the install with a new escalade nav unit. You need a separate GPS antenna that mounts up under the dash (no, the ONStar antenna isn't used). You also need the NAV DVD, i bought a new one but older versions can be had on ebay rather inexpensively. The trickiest part of the installation is getting the proper BOSE amp, it MUST be a luxury amp and MUST have already been operating in a vehicle (ie already coded). I know the bose amps aren't high quality, but the headunit talks to the amp over a class 2 data bushttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif. There are also some wiring connections to be altered at the amp. Finally, you need to supply a VSS signal to the headunit.
I am no wiring expert, I have installed several car stereos im my own cars. The install was not too bad, just time consuming.
The headunit is great and i love it. All of the functions in my truck work perfectly (I have ONStar, Rear Seat Entertainment, and XM). It even shows a chevy logo on the screen at start-up.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif
This is my favorite "you can't do that" mod. The guys at the parts counter will laugh at you if you discuss this with them. Their eyes just glaze overhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif.

Uplink 09-04-2004, 12:14 AM Thanks for the info.. It was what I have found out but wanted to hear from someone who has done it. Ebay has a few but they look worn out but I will keep trying. I have the BOSE system with the 6 disk in dash but looking to upgrade, the 2K price is a bit steep after spending the $$ on the truck.
Thanks again for the info.Edited by: Uplink

Thanks for the info. I know nil about NAV units, but
my question would be; Can you integrate a rear camera
into this NAV unit you installed? When you go into reverse,
the NAV screen should show you the rear view...
thanks for any info,
T.
Burner 09-05-2004, 04:57 PM How about a link to the Ebay page?
baimpala 09-05-2004, 05:05 PM Mike,
Any pictures of the install or finished product?
Thanks,
Dennis
Sir-Col 09-05-2004, 08:58 PM mwgasman, thanks, and can you give us a detail on what to do and a short description on how to...etc there is a lot of us that want to try it too. Many Thanks

BlueOx03 09-05-2004, 09:06 PM There's an easier way, with more features...
AVIC-N1
mwgasman 09-06-2004, 12:59 AM I bought my NAV unit from a company called Model Electronics. It was new so I didn't need to have theftlock removed. The only thing I bought from eBay was the AMP. I bought everything else from GMPartsdirect.
Here is a complete parts list to do the intall with a 6 disc CD changer:
Um8 NAV Head Unit----- #15204335,15204334--------------$1300
Nav Disk----------------- #15105609--------------------------$150
GPS ant------------------ #15207447,15135178--------------$75
Mic------------------------#25705367--------------------------$45
Amp--------------------- #15199992,15199884,15112662---$400
AUX harness------------#15312903---------------------------$25
AUX CD changer-------#15055250---------------------------$180
Keep in mind that this will only work for 03-present trucks WITH Bose.
I have not yet installed the 6 disk changer and probably won't. All my music is on my ipod. I may install an ICELink in place of the changer. I also have not installed the Mic (for automatic noise cancellation). It is not necessary at all.
Installation of the headunit itself is simple: Remove dash bezel, remove old radio, mount GPS antenna up under dash, plug in new headunit, reinstall dash bezel.
Replacement of the amp required me to disassemble most of the center console. The wiring changes at the amp require moving pins around in the connectors. I have a diagram for these changes. I got all of the wiring info from the link above.
You also have to tap into the serial data bus at the amp and tap into the VSS circuit for a speed signal to the headunit.
The whole process took me about 1.5 days but I am a little too detail oriented and typically take longer to do this sort of thing than other people.
I can take pictures and try to post them if you like, but there are many pictures of the completed install in the link above. I should have taken pictures, but I did not. I got all my information and help from Linda on that forum.
There is no easy way to use a backup camera with this NAV unit.
I thought about the AVIC-N1 but I dislike the flip-up screens, I think they look out of place. I like the oem look and ease of integration with all my factory systems (ie RSE, XM, ONStar, RSA)
I will try to take pictures of my finished product and post them tomorrow.Edited by: mwgasman

Is the screen a full color TFT screen? If not, I think I'm
about to flip-flop and agree with BlueOX, the AVIC-N1
may indeed be the way to go for me... I couldn't see
paying that much and NOT being able to connect a rear
facing camera. Also, not being able to use the NAV
system if you're playing a CD? that'd be the deal killer
for me, even though I have a CD-changer too.
Just my opinion, and THANKS for the info!

Terry 09-19-2004, 11:23 AM There is no easy way to use a backup camera with this NAV unit.
Not sure if you were aware of this new VCI-GM1 adapter from PAC,
but if you wanted a rear camera input, this would be the easy way to do it.
I will try to take pictures of my finished product and post them tomorrow.
I would REALLY like to see some pictures with the OEM
NAV system powered up. I have yet to see what the
screen looks like when in-use. The GM brochure I read
about the NAV system is all in black&white which doesn't
do a color screen any justice at all...
Thanks!
T.
mwgasman 09-19-2004, 01:50 PM I had not seen that back-up camera adapter before. I will have to look in to that. There is also a company that will modify the nav unit for DVD play and backup camera, but that costs ~$450http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif.
Here are a few photos of my nav system. I am sorry for the lines on the screen. They showed up when I re-sized the photos for posting. I am not photo-savvy enough to know how to fix the problem.

Thanks for the pics - looks good! I just can't make up my mind.
The thing about the AVIC N1 that would be nice would be the instrument
guage screen showing the speed, but since it uses the VSS input,
I'm not sure it'd be the calculated speed from the satellites. I
don't want the VSS speed since I've changed to taller tires and the
VSS wouldn't be accurate unless theres some sort of
multiplier that is entered into the N1....
Oh well, I'll sit on the sidelines for a little while longer.
Thanks again,
T.
BlueOx03 09-22-2004, 10:01 PM The speed displayed on the N1 is GPS based NOT VSS based. I've run one with and with out, either way it is from GPS. It's how I see how fast I'm really going (bigger tires). In all actuality, the N1 works fine without VSS, it just helps keep it more accurate.
Why do most of you want a stock look? So that it less likely that someone will steal it? Hello! You can see the screen on the stocker ALL the time. The N1 folds in. Both are worth about the same used and it wold take more time to steal the whole N1. The HU is no good with out the hide away unit and wires.
To each his own.
On and if anyone wants more reasons the N1 is better than the Delco stocker, let me know, I got plenty...

Cool! Thanks for the info! I was hoping you'd
post some info. since you've got an AVIC-N1.

As for me, I never said I wanted a stock look. One thing that would make me hesitate more is having to rip out the Bose stuff and even replace all the speakers if I did go with the N1 UNLESS the adapter from PAC would allow it all to work with the N1...
I've also heard the N1 screen will hit the shifter (don't personally know about this though) when moving in/out for display. I'm not to crazy about how high the screen is above the dash line either. If the unit could be lowered down to the bottom of the opening (eliminate that ~1" gap at the bottom of the unit) then it might be alot better - again, I don't personally know because I haven't seen one installed like that....
SO - that's just some of the reasons I'm "on the fence" so to speak... There's a "flush mount" Kenwood system shown in another discussion about stereo systems, but I haven't checked how "good" the NAV part of that would be....
Thanks for any more insight - I DO appreciate it.

Here's the one I was referring to;
http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=15030&PN=3
I can't afford to spend that much, which is
another reason the factory NAV system is fairly
attractive - I wouldn't have to rip out all the
Bose amps/speakers and replace them...

BlueOx03 09-23-2004, 09:15 PM Price wise, based on this list from anouther site, there isn't a big cost difference.
Um8 NAV Head Unit----- #15204335,15204334---------$1300
Nav Disk------------- #15105609-------------------$150
GPS ant--------------- #15207447,15135178-----------$75
Amp-------------- #15199992,15199884,15112662---$400
Pac and Axxess make adaptors to make it play nice with On$tar and your Pose amp and speakers. no ripping required...
Yes the screen hits the shifter when folding, it can be easily be heated and bent, or just open and close it manualy as needed.

tbyrne 10-16-2004, 08:09 PM I'm going to be all over this upgrade when my truck comes it. This is sweet!!!
I know that some people will ask "why not go with an aftermarket system?". I sometimes like the factory look. It's not above it being stolen or anything I just think it looks cleaner. My Suburban has one of the Pioneer systems with the flip up screen and my 300C has the factory NAV. I look the looks of that one better. The one in the Suburban makes contact with the shifter if it's in park so I turn the auto flip-up feature off.
