I installed my FS when my truck had 500 miles. Put new oil in(Delo) and replaced the original oil filter with a Mobil 1.
Truck now has 4500 miles and I'm wondering when I should change the oil.
Some say 5K and change the full flow and the FS filter also but then some say just go to 10K and change it all...
The full flow filter(mobil 1) is about $10 and the FS filter is $26. My concern is that this is a new motor and there may be a significant about of junk that possibly has already plugged up the FS and Mobil 1...?
I thought about just draining out the Delo and replacing just the oil and running it another 5K then do a complete change over with all the filters and start with synthetic at that point.
I know the FS filter element is designed to hold lots of junk from much larger engines and it has a paper media in it to absorb water from condensation in the oil...
Has anyone been thru this already? What did you do?
PS. I do have about 4 oil analysis kits ready to go if I need them. I was not going to do an analysis until 10K...

You've already changed the oil at 500 miles...so you have the break-in period covered. GM doesn't even say in their manual that you have to change oil after the first 500 miles...just that you drive easy and vary speed during the first 500 miles. The only way to truly know the oil status is to do the oil analysis. But with just 4500 miles I'm sure you're O.K. Check your DIC (driver's information center) info and check your engine oil life % there (since you're under warranty).

I did mine in the same time frames as you and just changed my oil, FS, and FF with 10K on it.

Did you have an oil analysis? How did your oil look? I do plan on changing to Synthetic at 10K....

No I was over my 10K I had another 3K mile trip to leave for, and the lab was slow on getting a kit to me. The oil was just as black as ever and should be.

Regarding the color of the oil...and it getting black...it WILL get black even with the FS2500. It may take a little longer to get black...but it'll get black. I've even got the EGR Blocker Plate/Finger Stick and it still gets black. "Blackness" is not indicative that the oil is done. The ONLY way to know for sure the status of your oil is an analysis. However, from the experience of many, assuming a healthy engine, you can run your oil well past 10,000 miles with the bypass filter. Longer still if you're using synthetic. But their is no substitute for an oil analysis if you want to know for sure about the condition of your oil and whether there are any clues in the oil as to the function/wear going on in your engine.

Yes, I'm definitely going to go to 10K after the first 10K.
I'm just wondering if it would be beneficial to just drain the oil and replace with new Delo until I hit 10K and then do both filters and synthetic or do all filters and oil at 5K or maybe just do an analysis at 5K...? Or just leave it alone and hope not too much breakin crap is in the filters. I know I did the 500 mile change but it seems everyone on here seems to think these motors won't break in for 15K...?

If it will give you peace of mind...changing the Delo would be relatively inexpensive...although with the filtration you have installed I'm sure you are O.K. Delo is good oil. Your truck is new. You're filtering down to 2 microns with the bypass filter I believe. I think you're OK.

So, I've got 4700 on it right now. FS advises to change everything and do an oil sample. One of the other guys there said to just wait to 10K and do it all... I'd like to hear from someone who has done a sample at 5K with the FS. The delo at 4700 looks fine just looks thin to me.. If I do the change and the sample it will be about $80. It's definitely better to be safe with these expensive engines but I'm still not one to go totally overboard...
