The plastic wheel lug nut covers are coming loose. Anyone else having this problem? Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Don't use an impact wrench like my nephew did to mine http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

Mine were loose. Some were just hanging in the hub covers. I put a piece of masking tape around the treads on the lug nuts that the plastic covers screw into. Put them on hand tight and haven’t had a single one come loose since. You do have to replace the masking tape periodically. Since I rotate my tire every 4K miles I just do the ones as required at that time.

How 'bout a dab of regular, soft, silicone on the threads before tightening them. Damn things are stupid; Had the same issue with my old Toyota ones. I'm thinking that this big, badass truck with 8-lug wheels and E-rated tires probably shouldn't be designed to need crappy little plastic trims. I don't like the plastic hub covers on all the new trucks, either. I think it has something to do with the ugly, higher-tech lug nuts they're using, though.

The nut covers are indexed. Righty tighty until it begins to snug up and then turn no more than 90° to the first click. Some of them might be a tad loose, but that's just so you have something to b!tch about.

Probably one wrap of teflon tape around your nuts will keep your nuts' covers from coming loose and driving you nuts.

I recently had all of my wheels balanced and I took all the center-caps off before heading to the shop to keep their grubby hands off my nuts....plastic nuts....and purty shiny plasti-chrome caps. Checked the torque when I got home. Hey, they're just high school and college kids making a little over minimum wage.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Hi all,

GM has a notice about this problem and it seems that they recommend a black permatex that stays soft and does not harden I bought some but have yet tried any!

Good luck

Permatex should make a real mess out of the lug nuts. All the dirt and grit will stick.

RTV will dry but remain rubbery were you could break it lose I would say. Not going to attract dirt since it aint sticky after it cures. Kinda like silicone calk for your bathroom, rubbery even after it dries.

I like Ultra Black Permatex. The stuff is great for making gaskets and for other calking and sealing type duties it dosnt stink as bad as the Black Permatex as it cures. Good stuff for sealing wires too that will be subjected to the elements instead of electrical tapehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif There is a difference between Black and Ultra Black permatex.

Yes my nuts seem to come lose but i havent lost a cap yet and more than one dosnt seem to go awol at a time so I dont worry. Just dont over tighten, you can crank em down by hand IMO with a socket and no ratchet.
