There is a difference in the late Ally that most have not seen yet. I have. You guys that are doing your own Suncoast installs on late '04s need to call me.

Mike,

Is this LB7 or LLY?

I assume this would apply to someone doing just a transgo as well?

LLY only. If your unit has a toner wheel instead of pto gear, you have one of these and the drain back springs won't work and neither will the Transgo converter flow valve. The rest is pretty much the same.

So do the changes in the LLY Allison mean that it can take more torque?

So do the changes in the LLY Allison mean that it can take more torque? nope

Well... when an engineer changes the design of his system he usually does so because it is for the better, or is intended to be for the better.

With such a definitive answer on the "more torque" question, surely we have an idea as to how the system was improved with the changes or maybe a bit more information on the "improvement" for the curious.

There has been quite a bit of info posted on the changes to the '04 Ally for the 8.1 gas and LLY engines, but not the LB7.

It has to do with fluid cooling and nothing to do with an increase in the amount of torque or HP the trans is rated for.

Maybe you should try a search or two before you jump on two of our most knowledgeable contributors who just maybe a little tired of answering this question...http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

In all fairness, the changes were to increase cooling capabilities of the trans, and also help reduce pump noise at idle (more prominant on the 8.1 as it dont have the diesel noise to mask it). The changes were made for no help in the torque mgmt area. Why should they, the Allison OEM ratings will still handle the factory LLY ratings.. Thats all GM/Allison are looking at. Not the guy that wants to add a box and not have to worry about his transhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
