I'm at 8100 miles on my 04 Duramax/Allison. Just did the 2nd oil change & wanted to change out the spin-on trans filter & the fuel filter.

Question: how is this done? For the Allison, does only the filter need to be changed or all the fluid too? if only the filter, is there a need to add a little trans fluid after putting the new filter on (if so, what kind)? And for the fuel filter, what's the procedure for changing this?

Any direction would be much appreciated!

Eric GM Tech and moderator put a nice DIY together here in the DIY forum on Fuel filter change, very helpful.

The Allison spin on is simple. Available from many sources but your dealer as they are over priced. Try a vendor here like Eric (Dmaxalitech) or if in a hurry try the Allison home page for a service center in your area.

Five thousand first change then each 25K. No fluid doesen't need to be changed at 5k.

Remove the red spin on filter ,clean ring magnet ,fill new spin on with Dex III ,place clean magnet on spin on ,lube gasket and install.

Check fluid at appropriate temp to insure that it is in range.

Simple.

go to the DIY section for fuel filter changing instructions. I personally would not fill this filter as the unfiltered fuel would then go into the pump and injectors. As for the transmission spin on, you don't need to add fluid to the filter, but then you have to add it to the transmission later http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif Use a Dextron III fluid. Oh yes, don't forget the take the magnet off the old filter and put the magnet on the new filter. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
