I'm going to order my first Duramax in the next couple of months. Anybody tell me the advantages of the 2 vs 1 alternator set up. I tow a boat, not interested in a travel trailer at all. Thanks for the help. Been reading the Diesel forum for a couple of years now. Have learned a lot of information.

the twins really arent necessaryunless, you have a plow assy.or a big trailer that needs alot o juice.or if you are one of them guys with a
c.b. that needs 5000 watts o power:eek:

A twin isnt necessary, but if your planning on using a winch on that truck never hurts, or winch ont he boat trailer, plow etc. Doesnt hurt.

Get everything, you can always just have it instead of saying "I wish I would have gotten it...."

& if nothing else, atleast you'll always have a fully charged spare battery with ya at all times in case your main one dies on ya when you're leaving work at midnight one night, & all the stores are closed, and you can't get road service to come out (speaking from experience) :)

Thanks for the idea's. Hadn't thought of those alternatives for an alternator. That does make sense. And having more is always better than having less.

Don't get it, it'll just be another GM alternator that will have to be replaced way too often.

Get it. Its MUCH easy to have it done at the factory than try to add it later. Mine doesn't have it, and I've wanted it many times.

You'll lose basically nothing in terms of HP and fuel economy, and you can't never have enough 12v power... Think computer, winch, offroad lights, sound system, etc...

Based on the options you choose, you may not be able to have it factory installed.

Check out my store for dual alternator kits. Very easy to add second alternator.

One reason to NOT get it, is that that second alternator position is a nice place to mount an auxilary fuel and/or coolant filter! Several companies make nice kits using that "extra" mounting point. Sure is convienient

If your just driving it every day and towing a secodn alts only benifit I can see is a slight "back up" if the first died. Now if your running high drain stuff then it is nice. I plow with a single and it does fine. Realy looking at the dual kit but I run a BIG amp sucking plow with a ton of other stuff. I get by fine now but it could be better......

Two reasons I can think of for you not to get the duals is when you hit those sand storms down south, you will have to repalce two alternators. And you don't need it. :D

duramax, what is the diff between clutched and non-clutched alts? What does a 2005 have?

Thanks!

adding 2nd alt was a piece of cake and it cost me 140 for the bolts nuts brackets and belt and 88 for the alt. all gm parts the parts are the same from 2001 and up and i would install them all day long it's that easy

Does anyone know if I can simply remove the second alternator without a problem? I'd like to get rid of it and put a clutched single on to stop the chirp at shutdown. From what I've gathered on this board that's about the only way to do it. Don't really need the second alternator and I'd rather be without the chirp.
