Hey folks.
I am replacing my 700r4 automatic, with a manual tranny in my 1983 6.2 diesel blazer.


In doing so, i need to replace my flexplate with a flywheel. I tried to count the teeth on the flext plate, and it seemed like there were only 142 or 144 approx.


Does anybody know the correct tooth count? and where should I get a flywheel with the same count? or do I need the same tooth count?

ALso, what are my balacing concerns? do I need an internally balanced or externally balanced flywheel, or maybe by weights to add to it?? im just not sure on any of this.

what bellhousing are you going to use? i have been looking to put a manual transmission in the blazer 4x4. i'm not sure about what to get the transmission from due to the transfer case hookup and everything.


is there a gas engine bell housing that i can put on the 6.2?

All Chevy bellhousings will bolt right up to the 6.2L. But I think that the flywheel/clutch assembly has to be specific to the 6.2(not 100% sure on that or the tooth #) The best way to find out about it is to call GM they would know.

Diameter, balance, hub diameter, and bolt circle are specific to 6.2\6.5l - no other interchange available.

I counted 139 teeth both on the auto flywheel that came off my 82 c20 truck and the manual flywheel off a 91 C30 bread truck, both 6.2 equipped. A gas engine bell housing won't work. The nose of the diesel starter is too big for the starter opening.

An NV4500 5 speed out of 93 to 2000 era 4X4 Chevy truck will work.
They were made with 3 different front bolt patterns. 92 to 94 had one pattern, 95 was changed, and again 96 to present. So care is needed to get the right bellhousing. try to find one with a diesel bell housing
A NV4500 5spd out of a 93 up Dodge truck or 96 up Chevy will shift smoother than the earlier ones.

so a nv4500 out of a 96 up will work?


is that just the transmission or the whole assembly with bell housing and a clutch?

A 96 up will work, you just need a 96 up diesel bell housing with the larger bolt pattern to match the tranny. i couldn't find a bell housing in the local junkyard, the dealer wanted $315, so I ended up buying a new GM bellhousing from High Impact for $265. The only thing is that with the 96 up housing, you must use an internal slave cylinder. It looks like my clutch off the 91 should work ok.
You might want to check your transfer case bolt pattern and compare it with whatever transfer case was used in the 90's to make sure it will bolt up to the back of the tranny.
