: My new 255/85R16 tires w/pics
70 gsconvt 03-01-2007, 01:35 PM Hi, several people asked for pics of my truck. So here they are with my new Dunlop Rover RVXT tires. Size is 255/85R16. The front end of the truck was jacked up 6 turns on the torsion bar keys, or about 1.5".
No trimming was needed. I may actually be able to lower the truck back down a bit if I want to. I haven't had them on for about 50 miles, but I can say that they are whisper quiet on the highway.
Duromax04 03-01-2007, 04:09 PM Those look pretty good. I think the 255/85 is a good call. I think those fit the stock wheels better than 265 or 285, but are still taller and fill the wheel well nicely. Thanks for the pics.
stocker 03-01-2007, 08:03 PM Looks good. Thanks for posting pics.
dozerboy 03-01-2007, 08:47 PM Also let us know what your mileage does.
70 gsconvt 03-01-2007, 09:37 PM Thanks. I just did reprogram the computer for the new tires. I've always tracked my mileage from day 1, so we'll see what happens.
dura_maximus 03-03-2007, 05:51 AM Also let us know what your mileage does.
This is the exact same setup I have looked into. I too am curious about any mileage gains or losses. After tire size correction I would assume that RPM's would lower at highway cruising speeds resulting in fuel savings. Maybe just a pipe dream.......
70 gsconvt 03-03-2007, 06:48 AM Well, it's been a couple of days. I can tell everyone that on the highway my engine speed is down almost 200 rpm's. So I can either drive 5 mph faster or hopefully get better mileage. I'm going to wait and put about 1500 to 2000 miles on before I determine if there's any mpg change.
Just know that one of the biggest factors in mileage if a vehicle's tires and friction. This probably accounts for why when guys go with a taller tire but it's a more aggressive tread it creates a lot more friction with the road. A street tire will always get better mileage than a MT tire.
dura_maximus 03-03-2007, 07:16 AM Start driving! :D
70 gsconvt 03-03-2007, 09:59 AM I'll do my best. I drive about 22K a year. So it shouldn't take too long. :)
mr_udy 03-03-2007, 10:35 AM Looks good. Got any photos straight on or front 3/4? Kinda wondering how the tall narrow tire looks comming at ya. Also, that tire looks more like an AT tread to me. I'd actually like to find a good 255/85 road/AT/Snow tire for next year. I love my BFG ATs, but they only have that size in a MT...horrible (in my opinion) on the wet road and snow pack.
70 gsconvt 03-03-2007, 11:36 AM I can take more pics and post. The tire is only about 1/3" wider than stock.

Not many choices of manufactures in this size. What scares me is the off chance of needing a tire roadside. That is should the spare not be available.
70 gsconvt 03-03-2007, 01:31 PM You just have to get your space that size or carry a big can or two of tire seal. That's what I'm doing.

Cooper makes this size in the Discovery ST and it's an AT tire. I'm putting a set of 255/85R16's on my truck next week. My tire guy says that there should be no clearance issues at all with this tire on stock rims/stock suspesnion..no cranking needed. We will see :D
BTW, I'm buying a spare in that size also :p:
dura_maximus 03-03-2007, 04:23 PM Post some good pictures if you can! :)
Blk04HD 03-03-2007, 05:45 PM I had the same exact tire on a 02 GMC 2500 hd and i had very bad wear problems. Tire dealer ended up trading me out of them for a set of BFG at's. These tires were only on the truck for about 1,000 miles and had already lost over a quarter of tread. I think the rubber compound was fouled up or something. Hope you have better luck with them.
DetroitDan 03-03-2007, 07:00 PM I was told by the tire dealer not to use them because the book shows they are too wide for my 6 inch rim. Since it's only a half inch difference, 1/4 inch on either side I still think I may do it. But it looks like I'll need a spacer between the duals. They are supposed to be about 33" tall, but they didn't look that big in the pictures. But I've seen plenty of tires that vary from their advertised height by a hige amount. Especially Remingtons, they average two inches shorter in their flotation sizes.
70 gsconvt 03-04-2007, 06:32 AM As for clearance issues, I did end up having my front end jacked up only 1" and have no clearance issues now. I was close on the driver's side for some reason, but not the passenger side. Truck is level and equal driver/passenger side.
Truck was aligned and everything came in on spec. I didn't need the green keys. Oh well, back to the dealer they go.
