: What is this switch/sensor (pic)
killerbee 09-01-2004, 11:54 AM http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/635_switch.png
Under the truck, right in front of the fan shroud, next to the cooler line. What is it? I want to relocate this, any problem with that?
dmaxalliTech 09-01-2004, 11:58 AM i wouldnt touch it. Its the forward discriminating sensor for the Air bags
killerbee 09-01-2004, 12:13 PM No kidding, like a G force sensor?
dmaxalliTech 09-01-2004, 03:26 PM kind of an inertia sensor you could say. Basically, its activates the air bag in front end hit
Max Power 09-01-2004, 03:43 PM Just about everything with a yellow clip, plug, tape, or loom is related to the airbag. I suggest that you don't probe with a test light. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif
killerbee 09-01-2004, 04:02 PM Well thanks .http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif
baimpala 09-01-2004, 05:32 PM Ever seen a rocket motor light off, up close. . . .It's just a baby rocket motor, but hey, then you could call yourself a rocket scientist for sure!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Go on, give it a try! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil%20Smile.gif(just kidding)
DavesDmax 09-01-2004, 07:20 PM kind of an inertia sensor you could say. Basically, its activates the air bag in front end hit
Hey, what's this red switch do that says "Warning don't touch!" http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
Eric, Nice customer service!
When's your new shop going to be done?
We will need to come up so you can give us Dmax lessons. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

I believe the term Rocket Scientist would be used if he/she walked away after testing. If they don't walk away they are called a Statistic.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
baimpala 09-01-2004, 08:05 PM LOL,
Or could be called a candidate for the Darwin Awards. . .

killerbee 09-01-2004, 08:13 PM Oh man, I was going to post THAT!!!!! Great minds think alike.
BlueOx03 09-01-2004, 10:24 PM I guess the air bag symbol and danger symbol that are plain as day on there weren't a dead give away??!!?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif Might want to invest in some Helm's manuals dude...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

killerbee 09-01-2004, 10:36 PM Where have you been all my life?
If I can't read a label, what good is that going to do me? Dude
Funny, my autistic neighbor knew right away what it was, his last name is "helmet". Me, i am an engineer, someone pointed out recently that meant I had no common sense, guess they were right.
LBZrcks 09-01-2004, 11:16 PM It's ok just smash it with a brass hammer and you'll be okay to move it. But if you use a reg hammer ur screwed
El Hefe 09-02-2004, 10:42 AM Well you could move it to the back so when people rearend you the airbags go off http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
ratlover 09-02-2004, 10:48 AM I think Eric is BSing ya, whack it with a hammer to verify. Better wear your saftey goggles though. Safety firsthttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif
baimpala 09-02-2004, 01:32 PM ratlover,
You've got it all wrong. You have to be IN the truck to see if the airbag goes off. He'd have to have someone else whack it with a hammer while he was inside (with his safetly goggle on).http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Dennis
akdiesel 09-02-2004, 01:59 PM This is kind off topic, but I heard there was not any issues with the airbag sensors and plows mounted on the truck.
Has anyone had issues with this?
Does the sensor monitor the impact on the bumper or the whole front end inlcuding the frame?
killerbee 09-02-2004, 01:59 PM You learn who your friends are!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Hug.gif
ratlover 09-02-2004, 02:23 PM A friend will be there whacking that thingy with a hammer to see what it is while you are inside to see what happens. A true freind will be there in the hospital when you come toohttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
IIRC there needs to be quite a few things happen for an air bag to deploy, one is that a specific sensor(behind the bumper IIRC) needs to get squashed, second a accerometer needs to see a specific rate of deceleration in the proper direction, and I think it may talk to the computer too for some info and all this needs to happen at the same time. so in theory you could have a budy whacking any one of the sensors with a hammer and you arnt going to eat the air bag. In theory, who wants to be the guine pig?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif
A plow will make it harder for the squash sensor(I'm using thenical terms here, sorry if I lose anybody, if you need an explination leme know) to get squished so you would really need to rock sombody to set the air bag off. Sudden deceleration or whacking something hard(while plowing) wont do it, trust me, I havent eaten an airbag yet.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif
akdiesel 09-02-2004, 02:29 PM Thanks for the clarification.
_nar_ 09-02-2004, 08:27 PM I thought it didn't need to get squashed but rather worked like a magnet deal so when you suddenly decelerate it dropped something and set off the bag?
I know on these GM trucks it takes a lot to set the bag off, seen a lot of guys bump deer and cows and never set them off.
I need to find out which way it works, because if I build a Bumper of Doom (TM) then either A:I can plow deer and not worry because it won't crush a sensor, or B: I better keep it floored when I hit something so it doesn't sense sudden deceleration. Which is it? Either way I keep it floored...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif
ratlover 09-03-2004, 08:49 AM IIRC there are a crush type sensor and a decelerometer, both have to get triggered at the same time. IIRC
ZZ4x4 09-03-2004, 12:41 PM I've never seen or heard of a "squash" sensor. When you replace the bumpers with aftermarket, there is nothing there to note (like a sensor). I think there are only the 2 or 3 inertia sensors of which IIRC two must agree that there is a force sufficient to activate the bag.
ratlover 09-03-2004, 12:44 PM I thought one of em wasnt an inertia sensor?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif wouldnt be the first and definatly wont be the last time I was wrong
nassdmax 09-03-2004, 12:47 PM front sensors are accelerometers. You do need multiple things to stack up to have the airbags deploy.
_nar_ 09-03-2004, 07:08 PM So then keep it to the floor and don't slow down, and the airbag won't go off? That should work well with my driving style...
akdiesel 09-03-2004, 07:15 PM Untill you meet up head on with some one with the same idea.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
Turfmower 09-03-2004, 08:57 PM They must have to get Squished or ever time you plowed snow they go off.
duramaxdiesel 09-04-2004, 09:22 AM Let me get this straight. If some bastard that I really don't like pisses me off again I can take a midnight ride to his place with my hammer and hit that little sensor and cause him some misery? Man, that would be greathttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif
killerbee 09-04-2004, 09:56 AM Sounds like you didn't read this whole thread. Of course an airbag has a chain sequence to detonate it, as does a nuke. One sensor destroyed may even disable the airbag.
