: take off the 245’s?
B-rad 08-31-2004, 11:23 PM ok im new here. first post. i get my 2005 CC LB D/A 2500hd tomorrow. from what ive been reading here no one has the stock 245 tires on there truck. everyone has 265 or 285's. and ive been told 305/70's will fit. whats the deal with the 245's? are they not safe? whats is everyones recommendation for tires? i'll be pulling a 22 foot bumper hitch enclosed trailer with this truck. about 10k lb loaded
smithinc 08-31-2004, 11:26 PM that is alot of weight on a bumper hitchhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

B-rad 08-31-2004, 11:29 PM sorry. its not a bumper hitch. its not a gooseneck. its a under bumper hitch. i hope that is correct. i dont know know all the lingo and abbreviations yet. im new here
NorCal 2500HD 09-01-2004, 12:10 AM dont feel left out I still have the 245's on my truck...........there gettin bald though....maybe its the juice.....
tmm2good 09-01-2004, 02:39 AM Nothing really wrong with the 245's, the trucks just look better with bigger tires filling up the wheel wells.
SUMMITMAXLLY 09-01-2004, 03:03 AM If you are going to use the maximum amount of the towing capacity of truck on a regular basis, I would stay with the 245s. By going to bigger size tires (unless you install a higher gear ratio in the rear end), you may lose some or a lot of towing performance. As with the others, the 245s just look too small for the wheel well. The 265s fit nicely with no additional modifications.
JJs DuMax 09-01-2004, 07:56 AM Ditto what Summit said. JJ http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
DRCook 09-01-2004, 08:03 AM however, the 3500's come stock with 265's and the same gear ratio options so a 3.73 & 265's on a 3500 will work as good as they will on a 2500 and 4.11's on a 3500 with 265's, well you get my point. a small difference in tire size is not going to degrade the towing capacity significicantly, key word is small, too much, and as every one has said, you start seeing different issues appear
what I cannot fathom is why the 265's on the 3500 and 245's on the 2500, just gots me baffled. the gears in the same ratio are still the same ratio, I haven't heard that the motors are any different, only the springs are different (and maybe some frame difference (maybe)) that allow a greater payload in the box.
just my 2 centavos worth
FASTOYS 09-01-2004, 08:04 AM I tow a 26' bumper pull toyhauler prolly over 10k when loaded im sure and have had no troubles with my 265s. Just add Edge Juice !http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Dmax Tim 09-01-2004, 08:27 AM I pull 14-15,000 on factory bumper hitch, worked good since 2000.
I run 285 and w/o juice still does a good job and even pass slow cars on 2 lane cowpath.
I wanted bigger tires for the improvement in gear ratio when empty since I don't tow everyday.
BTW the bigger tires ride better fully loaded than the 245.
265 and 285 D rated carry as much or more than 245 E rated and do it at 30 psi less.Edited by: Dmax Tim
baimpala 09-01-2004, 12:42 PM Go through the "Let's see what your ride looks like" thread and you can make a decision about what looks good and what doesn't. There are just about every color wheel, tire, gadget combination you can think of on there. There are a couple other threads that show wheel/tire combos, too. Do a search for wheel or tire, and you'll have enough reading to keep you busy for a day.
I still have the 245's, and will always tow with them, but I'm hunting for a set of H2's to put on. I guess they just don't sell that well right now.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

B-rad 09-01-2004, 07:08 PM wow you guys are great. thanks alot for the responses. im really liking the 285 look. the H2 tires look awesome too .i think i'll go between and do the 305/70's. found out today a few more weeks on my 05 C/C L/B D/A 2500hd http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif whats a good sand tire?
Terrain Twister 09-01-2004, 07:41 PM Went to Sand Mountain, Nevada this year. Dropped the pressure to 25 lbs. on all tires (left trailer alone). With trailer in tow I was the only one that didn't get stuckhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif, could've just been lucky thoughhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif.

Edski 09-02-2004, 01:45 PM Add an Edge Juice and you'll be ready for new tires in no time http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

My dealer has rims for $50/ea.
duramacks 09-03-2004, 04:47 PM Put 265's on. Gained a hair of clearance, and added some footprint for loose stuff, Tires are about 6-7 pounds heavier than the 245's each- so the stock shocks don't handle the weight quite as well. Bilstiens take care of that
baimpala 09-04-2004, 03:41 PM Dmax Tim,
Wonder how much to ship a set of 4 to Newport, RI. . . .
Would be nice.
Thanks,
Dennis
Mt. Hunter 09-05-2004, 01:10 AM Duramacks - Tires and wheels are unsprung weight and have no effect on the shocks. But stock shocks are pretty crummy and Bilstien is a good way to go.
TheBac 09-05-2004, 12:22 PM B-rad, Welcome to the zany world of DMax. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif
You could try 315/75/16's too, same height as the H2's....but I sure wouldn't want to put tires that big on the skinny 6.5" wide stock wheels..thats just asking for a bead blowout. I know some guys have....but thats kinda scary to me. So then you're looking at new wheels....
265's are what GM should have put on first...thats what I have now. From the info I've gleaned from here, 245's were put on to address "rollover" issues. 265's cause no issues other than speedo is off a bit slow. I'm now trying to upgrade to H2's...
When you "go big" so-to-speak (285's +), you may get rubbing in the wheel wells, but the solutions have all been covered here ad nauseum...just search torsion bars/keys. Also, if you "go huge" (H2's for example) you may have to trim the lower airdam or move the bumper out. Again, its all here.
Shocks are a whole different story, though. B-rad, you'll find that out in time..the stockers just plain suck. When the time comes..just search around here for info....just tons of it! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Bill Gisse 09-06-2004, 05:45 PM Before you charge off and buy big tires you should check with your dealer about the effect on automatic transmission warranty, that is if you got the Duramax/Allison combo. My dealer says iof I put 265's on to keep the 245's to put back on in case I have to bring the truck back in with tranny problems.
TheBac 09-06-2004, 06:05 PM True, Bill, very true.
I forgot about the GM warranty police....

B-rad 09-06-2004, 08:37 PM awesome stuff http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif looks like im going with 305/70's on mickey thompson classic 2's , lookin at toyo's or BFG m/t's
Because of the warranty situation, the snow tires I have on a separate set of wheels are 245 size. If necessary, I can change over for warranty issues.
