: Pyro Gauge
If I buy a pyro gauge for measuring EGTs can it hook up directly to my Speed loader exhaust probe or do I have to do another drill and tap to install it separately? Are there a particular brand of gauge that is better than others or is the brand that should be avoided?
ratlover 08-31-2004, 02:57 PM I bought a dipricol gauge becasue I really liked the looks and illumination. The illumination is GREAT IMO. I wired it to the same probe as my attitude.
Jury is still out on the boost gauge, it is reading different than my attitude, it dosnt seem to pick up low readings too well but 10 psi or so it seems to read in line with the attirude. peaked at 28 psi. This is into the wastegate. still need to do some more investigating since I just installed last night and havent played much yet so I can coment on its accuracy, pyro reads in line with the edge though. Have the 60psi version.
Really like the looks and illuminationhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif
How does the boost gauge install? Does it require any drilling or is there someplace that it just hooks into?
ratlover 08-31-2004, 04:19 PM on a lb7 you can t into the boost line feeding the wastegate. the diperco gauge made it beyond easy. Came with the litle t fitting and clips and everything. I just cut the line in 1/2 and stuck the t in there and ran the line. I'm not too thrilled about the little plastic line. Everbody uses that though, i may switch to some cool man braided or something. Solid line sucks too
Or you can tap the manifold. This will tell you exactly what the motor is seeing. Right now I am showing what the turbo is spitting out.
GMC2500HD 08-31-2004, 04:48 PM So technically (if you wanted to) you can T into the wastegate and get one reading there, then you can tap the pipe for the turbo and get another reading there, correct? So what would be the difference in the 2 readings? Just curious. I think I know the answer just want to make sure... Edited by: GMC2500HD
ratlover 08-31-2004, 04:52 PM One would show what the turbo is spitting out and one would show what the motor is getting fed after it travels through all that pipe and intercooler and such. Our system is *supposedly* not very restrictive(not much pressure drop) but I havent done any real testing.
What do you mean usual manifold egts???
GMC2500HD 08-31-2004, 04:56 PM Sorry was trying to type something else and obviously did not finish that thought....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif
Hey Ratlover,
Do you have the white face or black face dipricol gauges? What is it about the illumination on this brand is it you like? Have any pictures? I do like the look and they say something about a LED lighted pointer.
ratlover 08-31-2004, 05:22 PM I have the black.....I may try to borrow a digi cam to get some night pics. Ever seen the lighting on some of the auto meters? the little bulb or 2 in one corner that kinda shines accross it? Yeah, it dosnt suck like thathttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Down.gif Its kinda like gauges on your truck, the light comes from behind the gauge itself and all the nubers light up from behind kinda like the cobalt series from autometer. The pyro's pointer does light up real good.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif Auto meter makes a few gauges that have nice illumination like the cobalts and the lunars but those dudes are pricey. I dont know what the white diperco's look like? Nate(dsturbd) is who i found that carys the diperco's. The auto meter 1/2 pod thingy is a janky looking POS IMO but i needed something to tide me over till the full replacemnt gauge pod gets turned out this winter supposedly? I think the full overlay from auto meter looks a bit better?
I am glad you mentioned the 1/2 pod thing. I was considering that. There is a place I found that will sell the pod and paint it too for like $7. It looks like the pods come all black but my interior is Tan so black wouldn't look right.

dmaxfan 09-01-2004, 09:28 AM I run ISSPRO and love them. They are the cheapest and I like the illumination. The ones that I got have a white background with blue numbers. My turbo is t'ed into the wastegate hose and my pyro probe is installed on the driver side manifold. I am not savvy or brave enough to try to install it myself, so I took it to someone and had them do it. I was but the directions sucked. The guy installing it asked were to install the turbo probe because he had always installed the drill and tap type. I told him that I was told to T it into the wastegate hose. He had a weird look on his face and said ok. I said if it don't work then we can get another wastegate hose and order a probe, but it worked and is still working like a charm.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Here is a link to a pic of the gauge:

There is a full replacement pod our already. I don't know if there is an approved vendor here or not, but the manufacturer is ProPod. They have a listing of dealers on thier web site but its not $7.00. I don't think the 1/2 pod from autometer is $7.00 either.

I'm looking at the Autometer Z Series Gauge - not the most racy -fancy gauge but I think the black bezel will make it look kinda factory.Edited by: EMSi
I'm sorry, you misunderstood my post. The pillar mount is about $56 and they will paint it to match your interior for an additional $7. I didn't mean the whole thing was $7. It is an Autometer 2 gauge full pillar.
ratlover 09-01-2004, 05:25 PM I think the full pod is still an overlay.
baimpala 09-01-2004, 06:30 PM ratlover,
I'm pretty sure you're right as well. There was thread a while back about making a true replacement, and every full pod availabe that was mentioned, including Propod, was an overlay.

Terrain Twister 09-01-2004, 07:28 PM Braz, contact PeterT. He's a member here and can answer the probe question for you. FWIT, I'm under the impression that you can't. I also felt better having a gauge that was seperate from the Banks to do my own monitoring.
The pillar mount I ordered came last night. I ordered it on Tuesday morning and I got it yesterday (Thursday). That was fast. I got it from Diesel Injection Services (http://www.dieselpage.com/main.shtml). Matches my interior perfectly. I will post a picture when my gauges come in.
Hey Guys,
I am installing my gauges and have everything hooked up but I don't know how to tie the gauges into the electrical system for the back lights to work. Can anyone explain how to do that? I am assuming that you tie into the fuse panel on the left side of the dash board but I don't know how to do it.
Easiest way is to use a fuse tap and connect to the dash light fuse in the left-end i/p fusebox. On '01 it is the "ILLUM" fuse, number 14, 10amp. I forget which end to use. Just check with a test light or meter to see which is after the fuse, or someone here will know. Yes, it dims. If you search the forums, you'll find many places to tap it, some cleaner than others.

Thanks Jonb. That was exactly what I was looking for. Ran to the parts store picked up the fuse taps and it worked like a charm.
