I just bought a 2001 with the 8.1 and the Allison Tranny. When I went to look at it the tranny was wineing I asked around and most people told me that this was normal. Is this true and how much should it have?

sound is realitive. hard to say its fine or not without hearing it but yes an allison will whine more or have more noise than most other tranys. It shouldnt sound like you have a pete jackson gear drive but it may or may not be noticable depending on speed, if you are near a building, outside nosie windows up or down ect.

If it has a wine in 1st gear, a little less in 2nd and hardly any in 3rd, it is normal.

Yes, the whine you hear in the allison at is a normal condition. The reason for the whine is the high volume/large displacment gear type pump.

Also check fluid level. Hydraulic systems (industrial) will be louder, because of low fluid level.

Also sniff the fluid for a burnt smell, while you're there.

It may be wise to go ahead and change the fulid anyway. Can't hurt.

Well, I think you need to take it to dinner and buy it flowers once in awhile, this will stop the whinning.....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif

Just kiddin'....I agree, I think this is normal for the Alison.

My 05 whines as I am getting off the highway on OD or Drive. Is that normal ??

Bump -

What Reaper asked above?? (was looking for info on a search)

To elaberate a little...... trans has a slight "school bus whine" most
of the time (louder in the lower gears) but most noticable when exiting
onto a X-way ramp or decelerating. The "whine" stops when
decelerating at around 35 when it seems like the torque converter
finally releases. Is it actually the trans pump making all the
noise?

Also, is it the norm to have a little slop in the trans on deceleration
(from say 55MPH down to 30MPH)?? When coasting down to about
30MPH and then hitting the accelerator pedal slightly just to start
rolling I get a little slop "clunk" in the trans like it hasn't
downshifted yet to match the RPM. I know my '98 5.7 did it as
well. Normal?

Thanks!

The clunk seems to be a characteristic of the drive line. Mine
does it. Also I have the wine as well. Hopefully that is
normal (which I do believe to be)

The 8.1 motor is much quieter and smoother than the Duramax, therefore you will always hear the wine more so in the 8.1.

I narrowed my whine down to the P/S pump. It whines pretty good
at higher RPM's. If I hold it at 1300 RPM's in PARK the P/S pump
will whine when I turn the steering wheel back and forth.
