Is the down pipe on the LB7 similar to the LLY so that one could switch the two to eliminate the cat and then return it if troubles arise?

Yes you can replace the cat pipe with a pipe off of an LB7.

Max, the pipe you guys are talking about, is it the short pipe that bolts to the turbo then curls down and bolts on to the cat, what I want to do is buy a nice system, but I also want the option of installing the cat in a hurry if I need to, so what would be the best way to do it, buy a system from the cat back, then buy a test pipe and a down pipe, or just buy the complete turbo back setup?, Absolute Im not trying to Hijack your thread Buddyhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif.Edited by: BuckeyeQuicky

BuckeyeQuicky,

The MBRP systems we have do exaclty what you're asking for. The system starts/bolts on at the 4 bolt flange after the cat. We also have a test pipe for off road racing use that bolts to the front of the 4 bolt flange and goes up under the firewall to the V band clamp. 4 bolta and one clmp and you can interchange the factory front pipe in minutes. To my knowledge we are the only company that has the easily installed/uninstalled front pipe system

Check this link to a review of the systems done on this site:

No sweat Buckeye, Well I guess that makes two guys looking for a downpipe from a LB7 non-cali. truck!

Mark,

While I have the complete MBRP system and LOVE it, I would not say that the front downpipe would bolt on in minutes on an LLY, which is what BuckeyeQuicky has. Maybe because I put the downpipe on after the cat-back, or whatever, it took me almost as long to put on just the downpipe as it did the rest of the exhaust. Getting the old Cat off is a little tricky and requires a little more ingenuity than getting the stock exhaust off in one piece (with only a floor jack, since I don't have a lift). The new stuff bolts on QUICK, but getting that front downpipe off, well. . . not so much.

Sorry Mark, but you are not the only guy that sells the intermediate pipe or whatever you choose to call it. Dynomax #54194, about $130 and 15-20 minutes to install or uninstall.

Check out pics here http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10364&KW=dynomax

RaceHemi,

Guess you got me there I haven't kept up with their product line as it's not mentioned by many in the diesel biz etc. If that's an aluminized front pipe they are pretty proud of it at that price it's within $3.00 of our stainless steel one.

baimpala,

Well I haven't installed one in about two years without replacing the entire system sat the same time. I have had folks tell me recently since the LLY came out that it's pretty fast though to change out. The sales of the front pipes has really taken off since the LLY was put on the market and the option to swap in and out has been very appealing to lots of customers etc.

Would be nice to see a picture of this bolt on in minutes pipe. Just out of curiousity, I would like to see it...

Maybe for them, but getting the cat off is a TIGHT squeeze on my truck. If you know what you are up against or have done one before, it wouldn't take that long, but I hadn't and I didn't, so it took me a while. I could probably do it again in an hour now that I know.

It's called a head pipe, not a down pipe. I say this for you guys that don't know what head is. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

While I'm no stranger to head, I think it is a pretty common misconception to call it a down pipe. You're the first person that I can recall using the term head pipe. Maybe I should tell my wife that, and it will be my 'birthday' tonight! Thanks Mike!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Up.gif
