: IF i can do it....you can
DZLburban 02-26-2007, 07:46 PM Welp as of lately my wonderful 700r4 has been slipping in third gear (prolly due to some very rough offroading/mudding adventures this summer and the added weight of the lift and axles but...who can pass up mud?) so i decided it was time to rebuild it. While i am in college, money is just something i know i can get one day. i have an excellent transmissin guy who says he'll rebuild it for me. I decided that since i love to get dirty and learn how things work and i would take my own tranny out.
so yesterday (rain and cold) my boyfriend and i decided we'd get it done. this is our first 700r4, but second tranny drop (ramcharger was the first). We basically had two hyraulic jacks (which as you can tell by my truck, aren't tall enough-so we bridged the gap with lumber!) and a toolchest of craftman's best, oh and a Hayne's Manual. Trust me if we can rig up enough jacks/mounts to get it done, anyone can....so save your money at the tranny shop and do it yourself....its excellent bonding time with your significant other and you get to know your truck!
oh i do have a question: i am in need of the tranny lines, mine were seized tight and we couldn't get them loose (or didn't know how exactly) and ended up breaking them bc it started raining harder and i dont have a barn). where can i get some and whats a reasonable cost?
i thought i'd share the process (or part of it) with ya'll so others can see its not simple but not too hard (i mean a girl can do it!) to figure out....here are some pics of our process: (the last pic is all the tools we used and, ironically, own)
some more curiousity questions:
-is back in simpler?
-what's the green gear thing on the rear (odometer?)
-my tranny has a very large "k" on it, i remember reading somewhere what that meant, but can someone refresh my memory?
last but not least: it was FUN! :D
duramaxin14 02-26-2007, 08:08 PM Im pretty sure u can get some tranny lines from napa or your local autopart dealer we need to catch up some time and go slings some rustertails Good luck on the rebuilt
thumbsmasher 02-26-2007, 08:23 PM Please, Please, Please, get some jackstands!!!
Otherwise, you might get some unwanted bonding time with the underside of your truck.
Mattster 02-26-2007, 08:24 PM Im glad when I picked my K5 up last month the guy only had 15,000 miles on the rebuild. Ive pulled an SM465 before with a 205 attached and that was a pain and I cant imagine that the 700r4 will be easier. And your right who can pass up mud. I live to get my K5 dirty. Had it a month and have gone offroading 3 times so far.
DZLburban 02-26-2007, 10:13 PM i live near a fort knox, and with my boyfriends parents' "base residence" pass: i can offroad on the tank and hummer trails...and they tear em up great!

i have plenty. they are in the garage....elaborate what you mean tho? there's a jackstand w/ lumber supporting the engine till the tranny comes back...
fj45lvr 02-26-2007, 11:01 PM I decided that since i love to get dirty and learn how things work and i would take my own tranny out.
It kinda looks like the boyfriend is taking it out....and getting dirty.
DZLburban 02-26-2007, 11:18 PM It kinda looks like the boyfriend is taking it out....and getting dirty.
we both did it. i said that he and i did it. it was a joint effort but he definatly did the grunt work....i cannot lift the tcase or tranny out...i'm not that bigga girl, lol. i had to take the pics...
i've had the truck longer than ive had him...but he is a great help, esp when having a guys strength to loosen bolts or carry things comes in hand....but before him i did all the work alone, and just improvised...and i've had my fair share of bruises and such trying to do it myself. but that's halfa the fun...
:)
Mattster 02-26-2007, 11:43 PM Putting it back in is more of a pain cause you got to get the tranny to line up right with the motor and its very annoying.
fj45lvr 02-26-2007, 11:50 PM just teasin ya
DZLburban 02-26-2007, 11:59 PM just teasin ya
yah i know. i just wanted to make sure credit was given to him for helping and to clarify that NO i cannot lift a tranny from the ground and then stand up....but i could get it to the ground (lol)
:D

awesome.
hopefully the weather wont be rainy and 40* when we put it back in in two weekends! dont mind work, or any sort, just dont like being cold and trying to use your fingers, i work construction so i'm getting used to it tho (i moved here from arizona...cold wasn't mucha issue lol)
farmer0_1 02-27-2007, 12:40 AM just make sure when you put it together that the torque convertor is fully seated . do not drive it in to bottom it out. you should grab the nub or hub on the torque convertor and turn it and push in. it should be in far enough that when the trans. is bolted to the engine tightly the torque convertor will still turn freely . if not do not force it . drop trans and try turning the convertor and pushing in again until it does turn freely when bolted to gether . if you do not do this you will damage your front pump when you start it and will do the rebuild again. easy to do. if you cut the lines you could use a compression fitting to splice them back together. always glad to see someone take on a job . will give you a sense of pride and you will want to take care of it because of the work you put into it.
thumbsmasher 02-27-2007, 10:24 AM i have plenty. they are in the garage....elaborate what you mean tho? there's a jackstand w/ lumber supporting the engine till the tranny comes back...
Oh, I see. I thought you were supporting the truck on those. Nevermind:rolleyes:
High Sierra 2500 02-27-2007, 10:47 AM I remember pulling my 700R4... And putting it back in... And pulling it back out again... And putting it back in again... Alone... Pics in my garage. I am SO glad I got rid of that tranny... I don't know what I was doing wrong, but it certainly wasn't fun.
Bummer... You got stuck with a 4X4 so the transfer case has to come out as well. That's no fun...
If you thought pulling it was fun, wait until you go to reinstall it... There's a certain amount of brute force required unless you have like three people holding it or a transmission jack...
As farmer0_1 said... If the torque converter slides off don't just shove it back on, put it on very carefully. If you do just shove it on you will damage the pump on the transmission and if the tranny does work after you install it it won't work for long... You'll be driving along and all of the sudden you will loose all the gears and the tranny will be junk. Even if you don't start the engine you can ruin the pump by improperly installing the torque converter. DON'T ask me how I know...
Good luck with the rebuild... :)
DZLburban 02-27-2007, 02:47 PM welp my tranny guy says that the pump and torque converter were done, so he's gunna do a complete rebuild. we will be putting it back in next weekend, and i'll take all the advice i can get. thanks
goodtunes1978 02-28-2007, 02:01 AM get a 10 vane pump not the 13 it just steals from volume which is what that thing needs in od and get a torque converter from roadrunner they have always done a great job and have a long warranty
79AWD 02-28-2007, 05:36 AM Hi DZLburban, keep up the good work!
Now when you are at it, could you please take a measurement how much is that mainshaft protruding from the rear end of the case of the TH700?
I am in need of that information, and some other, because I am maybe swapping my TH350 of and putting TH700 under my truck.
Here in Finland we don't have too many cheap TH700's from 4wd trucks, but RWD's are quite common, so I am tinkering with the idea of putting one from an RWD in my 4WD truck. I just have to do some "minor" metalwork with adapters and driveshafts. Every possible writing and transmission related thing that I have this far found is telling just how long is the case with tailpart(RWD). None is saying anything about shaft:confused:
If someone else has transmission taken of from his or her truck or car, could you please measure it? I need measurements from both 4WD and RWD.
How long is the case of TH700(without tail)
How long is TH700 from front of the case to the end of shaft?
How long is the splined portion of mainshaft?
hemisareslow 02-28-2007, 06:42 AM :nopics: of you
hemisareslow 02-28-2007, 06:42 AM o and kudos to you for being so willing to git r done

I think he did not realize that the truck normally has that much ground clearance and is still on its wheels - not jacked up at all. If it falls off its wheels it will be one for the record books.:)

The green thing is the governor gear. Putting it back in takes about double or triple the time to get it out. I just did the 700R4 in my 'Burb and used "push lock" or "weatherhead" hose and fittings, available from a Napa store. It's really easy to use: cut the hose to length, dip the end in some trans fluid and push it onto the fitting. That combo is supposed to withstand 350psi without separating! Hope that helps.

I've changed over several 350's to 700's and vice versa. If memory serves me right, the case of the 700 is about 2 inches longer than the 350. They use the same spline count on the output shaft. If you are wanting to use the RWD trans due to price, the easiest thing would be to get the output shaft from a 4WD. Hope that helps a little...
