: duramax issues/problems to look out for
haneym 08-31-2004, 11:43 AM hi everyone, new to the forum here. i did a search and could not find much discussion of this, so if it has been talked about please forgive and point me to the thread.
i am looking for an 02-04 2500HD crew cab 4x4 right now. i would love to find a duramax/allison but they are pretty rare, at least in this area (northeast florida). if not, i will go with a 6.0 as it will suffice for what i tow.
my questions is what are some common issues or problems and what should i look out for? are there any reasons one year model is better or worse than another? i saw several threads about fuel injectors going bad, was this on a certain year or does this happen with all? i saw a lot of people talk about a 100k or 200k mile extended warranty, are these purchased separately b/c the dealer i spoke with said they all have 3/36k warranties.
thanks for any and all help you can give me and i look forward to the upgrade from my 89 k1500 that has served me well.

arguy 08-31-2004, 06:12 PM If you look at the 6 ltr gasser, start it cold. They have been known to have terrible piston slap issue. Especially the 2001's

I live in Jax also. You should be able to find a diesel rather easily. I bought mine brand new, 03 ext 4x4 for 32800. I used to own a 2000 with the 6.0, so trust me here, don't make a big mistake. Besides all of the towing power, the extra 3 miles per gallon and no piston slap (actually the lifters) is sweet. I NEVER plan to go back. I am thinking that the next car that my wife get will be a diesel.

haneym 09-01-2004, 09:39 AM thanks for the replies so far. texas is just too far to go for a truck, the cost of the trip would negate any good deal.
also - i have heard of the 6.0 piston problem but i thought it was only in the early models. anyone know if/when they fixed this? none of them i have driven had it (all 03-04s)
kirk, i have been looking around for a couple weeks and have yet to find a single used duramax. test drove one on sunday. LS with cloth, not even a loaded LT, $46 sticker. now i know they will negotiate but not $14k. where did you buy yours?Edited by: haneym
dmaxfan 09-01-2004, 09:52 AM The engine has a factory warranty of 100000mi this includes the injectors. The 3yr/36000mi is on the tranny and the rest of the truck.GM gave a 200000 mile warranty on injectors for the 2001-2002. So get it.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif But before you buy, make sure that you check that the warranty wasn't voided on the previous owner.
thinkenbig 09-01-2004, 01:15 PM dmaxfan, i just bought a 02 duramax from TX i knew about the 100000mi warranty and had heard about the 200000mi one but how do i go about getting the papers on it? or do i need to? Also the truck had no owners manual in it just wondering if anyone knows were i can get one? the auto guys up here in missouri are on strike
dmaxfan 09-01-2004, 01:28 PM Do a search, I believe that the 200000 mi warranty in on a TSB on this site. To make sure you still have a warranty and to see all repairs on the truck, have the dealer run your vin# and be there when he does it.

I bought mine from Nimnicht. I Have bought several this way. Check the inventory from their web site or from the inventory locator from chevy.com. You will see the internet sales managers name (chuck Bell @ nimnicht or was) call or email saying how much you are willing to pay. I located mine which listed at 42???.00. I said that I was willing to pay dealer cost per the invoice less all rebates. They countered with 200 or 400 over, I said fine but no other add ons. They agreed. I was paying cash so I told him to get it ready and I would be there at noon. I arrived, checked it out, handed him my check for 34850.00 with taxes and was gone within the hour. This took about 2 1/2 hours from the time I located it until the time I owned it. Remember they are still making 3% hold back plus the 200 over . To me the $1300.00 that they made is plenty fair.

CADMAX 09-01-2004, 11:31 PM Haneym,
I live in South Ga. not far from the Florida line and a town named Jasper Florida. The dealer there is a very small independent and from what I have seen he sells new trucks very cheap. The Name of the dealer is Bruce Glueck or Gleuck, not sure of correct spelling.
I have seen window paint on new Z71 ext. cabs as cheap as $23,000. I don't think he likes to do the trade in thing if you are going that route, don't know if you are, but just wanted to let you know.
Hope this helps.
