: Electrical engine noise in CB
syringa 08-30-2004, 11:23 PM After installing a Cb in my 2004 Dmax i am picking up terrible alt/injector noise. Ran the power wires directly to the batt. grounded the antenna. I went to 2 cb shops and they don't know . Anybody with any ideas??? Oh and Mike from Celgar if you read this phone Conrad at the marina i never got your ph # before u moved. Thanks everyone
NightStalker 08-30-2004, 11:44 PM Do you have a good solid ground? Have you installed a line (noise) filter on the positive wire?
syringa 08-31-2004, 12:05 PM I installed a noise suppressor in the power wires. when i disconnect the antenna the noise goes away, antenna connected its terrible. tried another marine antenna that doesn't require a ground, same thing. The cb shop tells me the antenna is picking up the noise . Anyone with a cb care to share thier type of hook-up in a Max thks
Max Power 08-31-2004, 12:19 PM Sounds like a ground loop. Look for a ground loop isolator.
habanero 08-31-2004, 04:44 PM Next time I am in the same state as my truck I will look, but if I remember correctly, I think I just picked up power for the radio from the wire harness for the overhead console (mine is a base model, therefore has nothing up there). I don't have any kind of filter on it. I am using a 3 ft firestick antenna in a stake pocket mount. My radio has some gremlins in it (a used cobra from ebay, don't remember model), but I don't pick up any noise.
habanero 08-31-2004, 05:18 PM Just had a thought. It is probably crazy, but which battery did you connect your power line to? Is it possible it is running too close to the ECU and picking up noise from that?
arguy 08-31-2004, 05:54 PM It's a CB, aren't they supposed to make noise? But seriously, big wire with a noise suppressor.

Black Dog 08-31-2004, 07:50 PM What kind of CB is it? Cheap radios are notorious for that kind of problem.
syringa 08-31-2004, 08:31 PM Thks for all the suggestions. I hooked it up to the battery on the drivers side. The radio is a Midland 77-255 esp. This "ground loop" thing could someone explain what it means. thks all
Hound 09-01-2004, 09:14 AM Any reason you're running a marine antenna? Marine radios and CB radios operate at different freqs and some antennas are not too broadbanded. Any idea what your SWR is on Ch1, 19 and 40?
syringa 09-01-2004, 10:32 AM I just tried a marine antenna to see if the noise would go away . and it didn't. The antenna that is mounted is a 5'wilson.

Max Power 09-01-2004, 10:42 AM here is some information on ground loops.

syringa 09-01-2004, 11:23 PM Thks for the great links. But it seems i am not to much ahead grrrrr!!!.
I took another battery and ran power and ground from it and ran the engine. The noise is still there. I would think this should eliminate the power/ground issues. I am thinking maybe a diode is gone in the alt. thks to everyone who replied i'll get to the bottom of this yet

jcummins 09-02-2004, 07:55 AM Since you know it's coming from the antenna, have you tried another (non-marine) antennna, and tried putting it in different locations?
Black Max 09-02-2004, 09:45 AM It sounds like the CB shop and jcummins are right and it is being picked up by the antenna (or coax), if you have used a power filter, and can rule out noise coming in on the power lead. It might just be that the antenna is too close to the engine compartment; your coax should be long enough to temporarly move the antenna farther to the back just to try it. Maybe the radio itself has to be moved (or shielded), or the coax re-routed. I think that if there was a bad diode in the alternator, the output voltage would be lower and you would see that on the gauge. When you figure it out, let us know.

Ill tell you what Texdoc, thats a great link, I learned a couple things on there, take for instance I would have never though about using coax or R-6 TV cable as a main power wire from battery to my CB because its shielded and will make your CB quiet, Thank You
