I've heard it's around 30 psi, but at what point does the stock turbo blow up?

It can have many variables, but from all that I have seen and read about, once around 32 PSI is it's failure point.

Mor like 37 or 38. The turbo on this truck was ran consistently at 33 psi. It survived for about a year like that.

If you want the turbo to be reliable, keep it under 32 psig. It you wanna blow it up quickly, run it over 38 psig.

32 PSIG is safe (measured at intake manifold)

35 and over is where things can kersplode depending on altitude, wether you bark the snit out of the turbo etc.

It is easier to bark the stock turbo when running over 32 PSIG, and after 35 there is very little gain to be had.

32 is safe for 99.9% of people out there.

I have blown up a lot of stock DMX turbos, at varying boost levels. 36-39 she will have the life of an M-80 on a short fuse.

Ya, you and Bully Dog Powered!

I remember the phone calls "Hey Juice, does this sound right to you?"

J: " I think you should start walking voluntarily until you get a new turbo, and stop racing"

C: " We're going out for Icecream"

J: "Good luck with that"

20 minutes later a post on the DP "of having 'juiced' my turbo.... "

Then there was BDP

BDP:" Juice, I think my turbo might be on it's way out"

J: " Why do you think that?"

BDP "Well it is howling a little at low boost levels"

J: "Does the loud sound go away when you hit 15lbs of boost or so?"

BDP: "Yes"

J: "I think you have hammered the thrust bearing, better stop dragracing for the night, drive it easy on the way home and start bidding on an Ebay turbo"

BDP: "Ok"

Next day on the DP "Juice warned me, but I knew i could get ONE MORE RUN IN:rolleyes: "

could a banks bighead wastegate bring it to 32psi? How do I keep from barking?

Yes a Bighead will get you there (and beyond, use compressed air to check adjustment for open PSI. Start at 26 and place on truck and then adjust as needed.)

Easy off the throttle, and driving through burnouts. 'Pedal' the throttle instead of jumping off of it.

Are there even power gains (or more air shoved in) to be had by revving one to over 32ish psi?

Is there a noticeable difference by increasing the boost, say from 24psi to 30psi?

Theres a big difference when you go from 30 to 60:D . Kidding aside, If you don't have the fuel you won't notice a big difference. With the right tuning you'll see big improvemnets as boost go's up. I ran my stock charger at 35 psi for a long time with no problems. However, I would not recommend exceeding 32. That seems to be the point where bad thing's can happen.

The risk outweighs the reward. Yes you can have another 30RWHP by pushing to 37, but at 39 it goes turbonuclear, and that's the end of your turbo.
If you are lucky to only push out the thrust or slightly tweak the shaft, you can limp it 100 miles.

If you are unlucky, you are risking engine runaway (happened to me once) having to clean out the intercooler, do an oilchange (and underwear) and removing the old turbo and replacing the up pipes which at those EGT's will almost certainly be welded to the turbo manifold/pedestal.

32 is the sweet spot. Still in the upper range of efficiency with almost zero risk of overspeeding. You will make the 'best' HP in that area without stressing drive pressures or kersplodifying turbos, which there are not too many left out there on ebay for some reason, although merchant and John Kennedy have a few laying around:)

Gawd, that phone call was horrifying to me. I do remember the not-so-subtle 'I TOLD YOU SO' afterwards, although I believe i used a little more diplomatic term for it at the time.:o:

And yes it is funny now looking back on it!
