: Exhaust Again
WOJO 1 08-30-2004, 03:29 PM So what are you guys doing when you change exhaust and your truck came with a CAT? I live in Nevada and they have the smog inspection requirement in placehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif. I know removing the CAT is illegal and I do not really want to mess with those people. The inspection station does look for them if they are required. There are many systems out there but who makes a good CAT BACK system to keep us that want to stay legal, legalhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif? Or any other help would be appreciated.
I do tow a 31' travel trailer and am looking for a little more.

Terrain Twister 08-31-2004, 12:13 AM Banks bolts to the 4 bolt flange directly behind the CAT. You could buy the CAT delete and run it for your towing trips, then when you get home or need to put it on for testing it's just a 15 minute job.

What he said! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
Here in FL when we "had" testing we used to cut a shell of a converter in half and tack weld over pipe in stock location to look like a welded factory installed cat. They have no way of telling if its real or not without actually smog testing it. Just an idea.

I've "seen"http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif a cat shell cut off the inlet and outlet pipes, emptied of the ceramic matrix and then slid over a piece of 4" pipe and welded fore and aft. Passes the standard emissions "mirror test" to see if a cat is in the system, has an uninterrupted flow-through and the vehicle in question never failed a tailpipe sniff in over 100,000 miles.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif
dmaxfan 08-31-2004, 12:50 PM I had a 94 gasser. We undid the bolts that connected the cat to the pipe. We then jacked up the pipe to move it out of our way. Found a 2'' pipe and beat one end flat. Hammered the flat end into the cat. broke apart all of the ceramic guts and removed the 2'' pipe. Started it up and blew the remaining parts out of it. Bolted it back up and viola. My own gutted cat.
baimpala 08-31-2004, 12:59 PM dmaxfan,
The moral of the story is; there's more than one way to gut a cat.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif

Mt. Hunter 09-11-2004, 04:17 PM Hog is a Salt Lake City company that makes a really nice exhaust. They sell to Jegs and I believe Summit, and another company I can't remember, who market them under their own name. Hog also does intallations at their facility. They do a complete 4" turbo back system that includes the cat. The cat is cut off the stock pipe, the holes are enlarged to 4" on either end and it's welded to the 4" turbo pipe. These systems are 304 stainless with stainless band clamps and hangers. It's the nicest system I've seen. A nearby dealer puts them on new trucks.
ShumDit 09-13-2004, 02:06 AM So, its pretty/beautiful? How does it sound? Resonance/rumbles? Talking w/a shop owner that has sold 2 just to have them returned for droning ~ dropped the line completely. Didn't provide additional details but wondering if the short muffler was provided instead of their 30" muffler. Not that many folks have'em and difficult to find someone w/hands-on/actual actual field experience w/'em.
Mt. Hunter 09-13-2004, 12:00 PM ShumDit - Which mufflers had drone? And did they still have the CAT? I've only seen two of these systems, and both trucks had Edge installed......one was a new LLY on the dealer's lot! (This dealer sells them that way!) The other was an 04 LB7 and the guy said there was no drone. Neither truck was loud and the exhaust sounded stock at idle. When they were revved the sound was throaty, but only enough louder than stock that you could actually hear the exhaust...the engine still made most of the noise. My gas truck's exhaust is much louder. Hog makes 2 smaller mufflers, and that bigger one called the Augmentor which is probably 8" dia and about 30" long. It has a flow bypass arrangement inside inside sort of like the Banks. Both the trucks I saw had that muffler. Hog is local here in Salt Lake. They'll doing my truck sometime this week.
ShumDit 09-13-2004, 12:15 PM As my previous "Talking w/a shop owner that has sold 2 just to have them returned for droning ~ dropped the line completely. Didn't provide additional details but wondering if the short muffler was provided instead of their 30" muffler." Stated, details wasn't requested at the time I was talking w/the fella. He didn't strike me as pushing his own at the expense of Hogs rep. I had spoke w/Hogs sales tech and he said "If you want less sound, go w/the Augmenter 30" which was my intent. Also, they didn't and wouldn't provide a cat-back system and stated no plans to. For you local people, I can see where it could be otherwise because you are right there. Not having been able to hear one for myself nor anyone I know that had, I went w/Banks Monster because the deal was to good to pass up. If noise is a concern to you, as it is to my wife, go w/the Augmenter 30 installed by the shop. What you have experience/heard for yourself trumps anything said here. Pls do report back for the benefit of others looking for a system in the future.
keepin' it 09-13-2004, 07:52 PM Bought my 2002 D/A new in Carson City, NV. No CAT. Curious how you ended up with a CAT on yours.
