Hey I have read in the past that some of you guys haul for a living with you trucks. I have some questions for anybody that does. Please contact me when you get a chance. Just some questions about rates and such. Thanks.

ive been filing in for my companys dispatcher the last month, we have 2 hotshots and 4 big trucks. There just doesnt seem to be much of a market for hot shots unless you have a dedicated run; which are few and far between. When you do send a hot shot out there is about a 95% chance you will dead head back home. But if your interested going rates in north texas with the fuel prices like they are are $2 a mile. Big trucks get 2.50 a mile and are almost guranteed a load back. Just my 2 cents hope it helps a lil

IM NOT BEING AN ARROGANT SMART ARSE, I am really not, and it is a good idea to get general idea of what other epople get, but you really really really really need to figure out your average mpg, figure out how much insurance for you would be hauling whatever it is you want to haul whereever it is you would haul it. Your maintenace etc etc and find out what you need to make to make it happen. I know alot of guys that will under cut you and slit your throat. I know alot of guys thatll take 1 dollar per mile just for some sort of backhaul so you arent running empty no money but can you live on 1 dollar per mile heck no. LIke is said its good to get an idea but you really got to sit down and figure out what your hauling where, your insurance rates etc.

Have you thought about Apportioned tags, Fuel Permits, ICC Authority and all the Federal Regulations? If you are going to haul freight for hire, there are alot of headaches.

Well I have 48 hours off at a time and I was just kinda thinking about using gooseneck flatbeds to haul things for people that dont have a way to haul. Just kinda started thinking about it. Sounds like it might be really expensive to get set up for it.

if you really are interested though look into some of the major carriers in your region. ACE, Cheetah, Maveric, and many more you might be able to get on as an owner/operator. Also there are a few companies that haul travel trailers out of indiana that could be an option to.

Don't forget that you'll need $750,000 min liability insurance to be DOT compliant. (They won't even issue you your authority until they have a certificate of insurance from your provider) Depending on what you're hauling, and who you're hauling for, you will likely need cargo insurance also. There's another couple grand per year.

Usually the insurance costs will make or break your venture. If you have business literally beating your door down, then go for it. If you only have maybe a couple possible candidates for freight sources, you are going to get eaten by expenses.
