: HP vs RWHP?

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the difference between RWHP and HP? I have a 2006 LBZ which touts 360 HP.

Thanks

Base HP is usually measured at the crank of the motor.RWHP is measured at the rear wheels. You typically lose 15-30 % through drivetrain loss.

RWHP is rear wheel horsepower power that is actually getting to the ground and HP is just horsepower at the crankshaft.

Gotcha.... So what if I have a BD power pup turned up to extreeme. That would be 138hp plus 360 hp at stock. That would equal 498hp at the crank, right? Any idea what the would translate too at the transmission??

I wager somewhere around 380-ish at the rear wheels. A dyno will (obviously) tell you for certain.

It would be 498 HP going into the tranny, that would be your approximate Crankshaft HP.If you have an automatic tranny my ballpark RWHP would be right around 400 RWHP.

I got it!!! Last question. Is 400 RWHP too much for a stock tranny??

You guys are great.. I appreciate your respones..

You will limp the tranny at that HP level. Adding a 65 to 85 HP tune seems to be about the limit for a stock Allison.

So a stock 5 speed Allison or 6 speed. Has anyone determined the limit on the 6 speed?

Thanks

6 speeds are less, like 40HP but that still pushing it.

400 miles on my six with some hard driving empt w/edge 100hp scortched my clutches.

someone showed an image of the clutch plates for the Ally - about the size of a coffee cup saucer - not much surface area to destroy.

But the nice thing about the saucers is there is more than one of them in each clutch pack.
So far in 4000 miles with 70HP in my '07 pulling the trailer I have not limped yet.

On the durability of the 6 speed. I have personally been running the Edge for about 6 months and put about 12,000 miles on it. I run level 6 almost all the time and beat on it quite frequently, and the transmission has shown no signs of any slipping. There are also quite a few other members here that are or have been pretty tough on their stock transmissions without limping. I think the changes they made helped to alleviate some of the problems the 5 speeds had with limping. I'm going to be building my trans soon, and I'm anxious to see what it looks like when I tear into it.

Really there's no point in you measuring crank hp (your tuner's advertised hp is RWHP). Manufacturers use it as a way of demonstrating what the engine is capable of producing without having to factor in how much the rest of the drive train is giving up. All that matters when you're driving though is RWHP, because that's what gets you down the road.

(whispering) Doesn't matter how easy you drive it you will still kill your Trans. :D

Cute reply but I am guessing if you don't hammer down that the life expectancy has to be a little better.

Has anyone actually measured on a dyno stock RWHP on the LBZ. It would be interesting to note, especially with the bigger EGR over previous LLY.

I think most people are seeing 300-320 depending on amount of breakin on the truck being dynoed. I was impressed but not surprised to see that a member dynoed an 06 LLY and it put if I'm not mistaken 295 hp to the rear wheels.

A little better, but not much. It is really just postponing the inevitable.

I put 60,000 miles on my 03 with my six gun set on 5 125 hp. When I traded the truck it had 93,000 miles on it and the tranny was still solid. I guess sometimes you just get a good one.

Seriously, your saying the 6 speeds are weaker than the 5speeds.. It doesnt make any sense that GM would bolt in a stronger engine then bolt a weaker trans behind it, and allison sure isnt going to be working in reverse making a trans weaker.. Kinda workin against the grain, they have made alot of upgrades and modifications from the 5 speeds, such as the c2s for example they are much weaker in the 5 speeds and allison improved the c2 area in the 6 speed thus making the 6 speeds stronger.

I ran the Bully Dog power pup at first on extreame and laid down 450 to the rear wheels with 5" mbrp exhaust and afe stage2 intake on a stock trans

I ran the hell out of my PPE on level 3 on their old box which was the 225 hp tune almost daily for 30K without problems on my six speed. I also did do a torque converter and co pilot. When Merchant did my tranny and I asked Eric how my stock clutches looked he said, "Well I'd say you got your moneys worth."

My stock LBZ Dyno'd 321hp and 556 ftlbs. The torque is low because I had to roll into the throttle at 2300 rpm in 4th gear (peak torque @ 1600 rpm), otherwise the trans would downshift. If you add 17% back into my hp number from the parasitic drag of the drive train, you end up with flywheel output around 375 hp.

The 6 speeds start with more factory hp.

Since when does a transmission have hp:D, anyways the 6speeds are stronger .

I think what he's getting at is the 6 speeds already have to tolerate 40 more HP from the stock motor. Therefore you cannot boost the power up too much because some has already been done with the factory output of the LBZ trucks.

By Goerge I think he's got it!!!!!!!!!!
